Cal U takes split of one-run games in Florida

Sagl, Uher combine to register 19 strikeouts while both tossed complete games

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 9) – The California University of Pennsylvania softball team split a pair of one-run games on Monday afternoon, posting a 1-0 win over Queens (N.Y.) before suffering a 2-1 loss to Wayne State (Neb.) while at the NTC Spring Games.

Against Queens, the game remained scoreless through three innings. Cal U loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth on singles by junior third baseman Natalya Smarra (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox), freshman designated player Hailey Wilson (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy) and a fielder's choice. The Vulcans then scored the only run of the game when junior left fielder Haley Bashada (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) was hit by a pitch to score sophomore catcher Megan Jahoda (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson).

The Vulcans were held to just five hits with Smarra and junior first baseman Lindsay Reicoff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) each reaching base safely twice in the victory. Junior pitcher Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) improved to 2-1 while notching a three-hit complete-game shutout and striking out 12.

Against Wayne State, the Wildcats took the initial lead of the game on a two-run single in the top of the fifth. Cal U managed to the cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman third baseman Emily Price (Warren, Ohio/Howland) led off the inning with a triple to center field before freshman left fielder Jacquelyn Fowler (Grove City, Ohio/Central Crossing) reached on a walk. Following a pop-out, Reicoff reached on an infield single that allowed Price to score from third, however, the Vulcans stranded the game-tying run at second base.

Cal U was limited to only four hits in the victory with Reicoff and Fowler each reaching base safely three times. Reicoff collected one hit and drew two walks, while Fowler reached on a single, walk and error. Junior pitcher Meghan Uher (Acme, Pa./Connellsville) suffered the loss after allowing two runs (both earned) and scattering seven hits over 7.0 innings. She posted seven strikeouts without issuing a walk in her second start of the year.

The Vulcans are idle tomorrow, Tuesday, March 10, before returning to action in the Sunshine State on Wednesday, March 11, when they face Urbana and Lees-McRae (N.C.).
