Vulcans post two wins at NTC Games in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 11) – The California University of Pennsylvania softball team earned a pair of victories at the NTC Spring Games on Wednesday afternoon, posting a 7-5 victory over St. Joseph's (Ind.) along with a 10-0 win against Urbana.

Against St. Joseph's, the Vulcans took a 5-0 lead in the top of the third after six-straight batters reached base. Senior center fielder Shelby Heyd (Innisfil, Ontario/Nantyr Shores Secondary) delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded before freshman designated player Hailey Wilson (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy) later added a two-run single. Junior third baseman Natalya Smarra (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox) scored the last run of the inning on a passed ball. The Pumas answered in the bottom half of the inning on a solo home run by left fielder Jordan Schneider

In the bottom of the fourth, St. Joseph's added two more runs on back-to-back doubles to cut the deficit to 5-4. The Vulcans countered with two runs in the fifth to take a 7-3 lead on consecutive RBI singles by freshman second baseman Emily Price (Warren, Ohio/Howland) and Wilson. In the bottom of the sixth, the Pumas scored three runs on four singles and a sacrifice fly to trim the score to 7-5.
Junior Meghan Uher (Acme, Pa./Connellsville) earned the victory after working 2.0 innings of relief, while classmate pitcher Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) scattered nine hits and allowed four runs (all earned) over 5.0 innings.

Heyd paced the offense by going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Senior shortstop Breanna Morris (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) finished with two hits and two runs scored, while Price collected two hits and three RBI.

Against Urbana, the Vulcans scored three runs in the top of the first and second to take a sizeable 6-0 lead. Cal U collected four singles and five-straight batters reached in the first inning before Morris and Smarra registered RBI doubles in the second. Price tallied an RBI single in both the first and second innings. The Vulcans added four more runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a two-run homer from Reicroff.

Junior Haley Bashada (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) earned the complete-game shutout, scattering four hits and striking out five in 7.0 innings. The Vulcans totaled 19 hits in the victory with five players registering multi-hit games. Morris finished 5-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored, while Reicoff went 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored. Price and sophomore right fielder Kaity Finley (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) both also added three hits against Urbana.

Cal U concludes play in the Sunshine State tomorrow, March 12, when it faces No. 12 Winona State (Minn.) and Southwest Minnesota State, both members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
