Softball closes play in Florida with split

Reicoff tallies five hits, four RBI and three runs scored in two games

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 12) – The California University of Pennsylvania softball team split a pair of games on Thursday afternoon to close play at the NTC Spring Games, suffering a 7-0 loss to No. 12 Winona State before claiming a 12-0 run-rule victory over Southwest Minnesota State.

Against Winona State, the Warriors took a 2-0 lead after scoring one run in each of the first two innings, including a solo home run by center fielder Natalie Kalmes. Winona State added four more runs in the top of the sixth after benefiting from a pair of fielding errors and scored the final run of the game in the seventh inning.

The Vulcans were held to only five hits in the contest with junior first baseman Lindsay Reicroff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) tallying a pair of hits. Junior starting pitcher Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) suffered the loss after allowing six runs (three earned) on eight hits and three walks over 6.0 innings.

Against Southwest Minnesota State, the Vulcans erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the first after sending 15 batters to the plate. Reicoff opened the scoring with an RBI double and scored on error before freshman designated player Hailey Wilson (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy) registered a two-run single and scored on a passed ball. Sophomore catcher Megan Jahoda (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) later lined an RBI single through the left side before Reicoff belted a three-run homer to stretch the lead to 10-0.

The Vulcans added two more runs in the third inning on a two-run single by junior third baseman Natalya Smarra (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox).

Junior Meghan Uher (Acme, Pa./Connellsville) scattered two hits over 5.0 scoreless innings and posted four strikeouts in the victory. Reicoff went 3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored and Morris finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Sophomore right fielder Kaity Finley (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) posted a pair of hits and scored twice, while Smarra and Wilson both totaled two RBI.

Cal U returns to action on Tuesday, March 17, when it travels to face Clarion to open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play with a doubleheader at 2:30 p.m.
