No. 12 Cal U outlasts Millersville, 57-52

Vulcans out-score Marauders 20-4 in second quarter

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (Dec. 5) – Behind a double-double by sophomore Seairra Barrett (Center Twp./Central Valley), the No. 12 Vulcans extended their winning streak to six games with a 57-52 victory at Millersville in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team imrpoves to 7-1 on the year behind a 6-0 record in conference play. Meanwhile, the Marauders fall to 4-4 overall with a 2-4 record in league action.

Barrett recorded 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting and tallied a game-high 13 rebounds (seven offensive) for her fifth double-double of the season. She played all 40 minutes for the second time in her career.

Junior Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) led the team with 18 points after shooting nine-of-nine from the free-throw line and added six assists, while senior Paige Wright (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) collected 10 points on four-of-four from the charity stripe and two three-pointers.

Millersville began the contest by scoring 12-unanswered points over the opening four minutes of the game and held a 12-0 lead with 6:06 remaining in the first quarter. The Vulcans responded with seven-consecutive points before ending the period trailing 15-7 after shooting only 3-of-12 from the floor. Cal U opened the second quarter with two lay-ups and a jumper by Glenn to cut the lead to 15-12 with 7:32 remaining in the first half. After a pair of free-throws from the Marauders, the Vulcans mounted a 14-2 run over five minutes after shooting three-of-four from three-point range to enter halftime with a 27-19 lead. Millersville shot just 1-of-11 from the floor and were out-scored by a combined 20-4 margin during the quarter.

The two teams opened the second half trading scores for the initial four minutes to bring the score to 33-28 in favor of Cal U with 6:29 remaining in the quarter. The Vulcans registered six-straight points to extend their lead to 39-28 capped by a pair of free-throws from Glenn with 4:53 left in the third period. The two teams traded scores for the rest of the quarter before Wright ended the period with a trey to extend the lead to 44-34. The fourth quarter started with Glenn collecting five points in the opening 30 seconds to extend the lead to 49-34. Millersville responded by going on a 10-2 run in under four minutes to cut the lead to 51-44 with 6:06 remaining in regulation. After a layup from Barrett, the Marauders scored eight of the next 10 points on four-of-four shooting to cut the deficit to 55-52 with 48 seconds left to play. Wright was able to make two free-throws in the final seconds to seal the 57-52 victory. 

The Vulcans shot just 29.2 percent (19-of-65) from the field, including 5-of-15 (33.3 percent) from beyond the arc, while Millersville ended the day at 37.5 percent (21-of-56) from the floor. Cal U was out-rebounded by a 41-40 margin, but was able to force 19 turnovers in the victory. 

Redshirt junior Celeste Robinson tallied a game-high 19 points and three assists, while classmate Aunjel van Brakle collected 18 points with seven rebounds. Senior Yasmin Cooper led the team with 11 rebounds.

The Vulcans are idle for a week before returning to action on Sunday, Dec. 13, in Hamer Hall against Shepherd in non-conference play at 2 p.m.
