No. 13 Cal U claims win over Shepherd, 75-59

Parsons registers double-double of 15 points, 19 rebounds - most since 2009-10 season

CALIFORNIA (Dec. 13) – In a meeting of NCAA Tournament teams from last year, the No. 13 Vulcans earned a 75-59 win over Shepherd in non-conference action at Hamer Hall on Sunday afternoon.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 8-1 overall behind a 4-0 mark in home games. The Vulcans played their first game in Hamer Hall since winning the NCAA Atlantic regional title in March, while it marked their first regular-season game at Hamer Hall since December 2012. Meanwhile, the Rams fall to 2-7 this season.

Sophomore forward Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) registered her second double-double of the season, finishing with 15 points and a career-high 19 rebounds (seven offensive). She made 7-of-15 from the floor while playing a career-high 33 minutes on Sunday. Parsons is the first player with 19 rebounds in a game since former All-American Kayla Smith accomplished the feat during the 2009-10 season.

Junior Precious Martin (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) posted 14 points, nine rebounds (seven offensive) and five steals, while sophomore Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) tallied 12 points and nine rebounds despite playing only eight minutes in the first half due to foul trouble. Junior Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) and redshirt freshman Morgan Jennings (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) both finished with 11 points, while Glenn also matched her season high with seven assists.

Cal U opened the game on 16-4 run after making six of its initial eight shots before later adding back-to-back three-pointers to take a 24-8 lead with 2:35 left in the first quarter. Barrett was whistled for her second foul of the game less than a minute later, as the Rams cut the deficit to 24-14 at the end of the quarter. The Vulcans started the second quarter on an 8-1 run to take a 32-15 lead on a three-pointer by Jennings with 7:58 left before Glenn picked up her second foul of the game at the 7:35-mark. Shepherd worked the deficit down to 13 points, 35-22, with 3:25 left before halftime while Barrett and Glenn were on the bench due to foul trouble. The Vulcans closed the quarter with six-unanswered points to take a 41-22 lead at the break, as the Rams made their last field goal of the first half with 6:51 left in the second quarter.

The Vulcans took their largest lead of the game at 45-22 on a layup by Barrett with 8:19 left in the third quarter. Shepherd later mounted a 14-3 run to cut the deficit to 51-40 at the 1:49-mark in the quarter, as the Vulcans were limited to just one-of-nine shooting over nearly five minutes. Cal U then scored eight-straight points to take a 59-40 lead on a three-pointer by Jennings with 9:50 left in the fourth quarter before Shepherd countered with nine-unanswered points in just under two minutes to trim the deficit to 59-49 at the 7:55-mark. The Vulcans then sealed the victory with a 9-2 run to take a 68-51 lead on a jumper by Barrett with 4:52 left to play.

Sophomore Morgan Arden scored a game-high 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting, while also posting four rebounds and four assists. Junior Liz Myers added a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds (four offensive) in the losing effort.

Cal U returns to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Wednesday, Dec. 16, when it travels to face IUP at 5:30 p.m.
