Women's Basketball tops Lock Haven, 67-48

Vulcans win home-opener for the ninth time in the last 10 years

CALIFORNIA (Nov. 21) – The No. 5 Vulcans earned a 67-48 win against Lock Haven in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 3-1 overall with a 2-0 mark in league play. The Vulcans have now won their home opener nine times in the last 10 years. Meanwhile, the Bald Eagles fall to 1-3 this season and 0-2 in conference action.

Junior Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) led the team with 15 points after shooting 7-of-10 from the floor. She also added six assists and three steals while playing all 40 minutes for the third-straight game. Glenn ranks third in the PSAC this season with 22.5 points per game and sits fourth in the league with 24 assists.

Sophomore forward Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) finished with 14 points, four rebounds and three steals despite batting foul trouble in the first half. Junior Precious Martin (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) added 10 points and four rebounds, while sophomore Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) posted eight points and a team-leading 11 rebounds off the bench.

The Vulcans opened the game on an 11-2 run following a jumper by Barrett with 6:39 left in the first quarter. Lock Haven eventually snapped a span of five-plus minutes without a field goal at the 4:14-mark before Cal U closed the quarter on a 7-2 rally to take a 20-7 lead following a free-throw by Glenn. The Bald Eagles engineered a 9-2 run to start the second quarter and cut the deficit to 22-16 with 5:43 remaining before halftime. Cal U stretched the lead back to double-digits, 31-20, on a three-pointer by freshman Emily Suckling (Cheltenham, Australia/Mentone Girls' Secondary College) with 1:23 left in the second quarter before the Vulcans took a 33-24 lead at the break.

Following a free-throw by Lock Haven early in the third quarter, Cal U scored 11-unansnwered points after making five-straight shots to take a 44-25 lead on a jumper by Martin with 7:17 left in the third quarter. The Vulcans later scored eight-unanswered points to stretch their lead to as many as 23 points, 56-33, on a jumper by Barrett with 9:43 remaining in the game. Lock Haven eventually worked the deficit down to 63-47 with 2:06 left in the fourth quarter following a 10-3 run.

The Vulcans finished the game shooting 45.5 percent (30-of-66) from the floor, while the Bald Eagles shot at a 33.3 clip (19-of-57) from the field. Lock Haven held a 43-32 rebounding advantage and Cal U scored 26 points off turnovers on Saturday.

Senior Lysa Mealing recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds (five offensive), while freshman Ayanda McGill-Jefferson finished with seven points and seven rebounds in the loss.

Cal U continues its weekend homestand tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 22, when it hosts Bloomsburg at 1 p.m. in a rematch of last year's NCAA regional championship.
