Cal U earns win over Bloomsburg, 80-65

Barrett, Martin both score career highs, combine for 39 points and 17 rebounds

CALIFORNIA (Nov. 22) – In a rematch of last year's NCAA regional championship, the No. 5 California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team claimed an 80-65 victory over Bloomsburg on Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 4-1 overall with a 3-0 mark in league action. Cal U won both meetings against Bloomsburg in last year's post-season – PSAC semifinals, NCAA regional championship – after the Huskies won the lone meeting in the regular season. Meanwhile, the Huskies fall to 3-1 this year with a 1-1 record in conference play.

Sophomore forward Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) scored a career-high 23 points after shooting 9-of-12 from the floor and five-of-six from the free-throw line. She also led the team with nine rebounds (three offensive) and added three assists, two blocks and three steals while playing all 40 minutes. The reigning PSAC West Freshman of the Year, Barrett is averaging 15.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per game this season.

Junior Precious Martin (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) also set a career high with 16 points in the victory after shooting 7-of-14 from the field. She totaled eight rebounds (seven offensive) and four assists in a career-high 34 minutes against the Huskies. Classmate Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) finished with 16 points, five rebounds, seven assists and three steals, while senior Paige Wright (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) added 11 points and three assists.

The teams traded points for the opening four minutes of the game before Cal U scored six-straight points to take a 13-8 lead on a jumper by Martin with 4:43 left in the first quarter. The Huskies then answered with six-consecutive points before the Vulcans answered by taking a 19-14 lead on a basket by junior CeCe Dixon (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) with 1:50 remaining in the quarter. Cal U held a 21-19 lead entering the second quarter before stretching the lead to 28-23 on a pair of free-throws by Glenn with 5:32 left before halftime. The Vulcans eventually closed the second quarter on a 9-0 run, including four free-throws in the final 30 seconds, to take a 42-32 lead at the break.

The Vulcans were held scoreless for the initial 90-plus seconds of the third quarter before mounting an 11-4 run over nearly four minutes to take a 53-40 lead on a layup by Barrett. Following back-to-back three-pointers by Bloomsburg, Cal U countered with six-straight points to take a 59-46 lead at the 1:35-mark following a pair of free-throws by Barrett. Bloomsburg cut the deficit to single digits, 59-50, at the end of the quarter and eventually worked the lead down to 65-57 with 5:52 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Vulcans then sealed the victory by scoring 10-straight points over four-plus minutes to build a 75-57 lead with 1:33 left to play.

Cal U shot over 50 percent in the first half before finishing the game shooting at a 46.0 clip (29-of-63). Meanwhile, Bloomsburg finished the game with a .397 field-goal percentage (25-of-63). Both teams finished with 37 rebounds and the Vulcans scored 27 points off turnovers.
