Vulcans defeat UPJ in last second, 65-63

Glenn scores 25 points, including the game-winning basket at the buzzer

JOHNSTOWN, Pa (Nov. 18) – Behind a last-second basket by junior Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport), the No. 5 California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play with a 65-63 victory at Pitt-Johnstown on Wednesday night. 

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 2-1 on the year and 1-0 in league action. Meanwhile, the Lady Cats fall to 1-2 overall behind a 0-1 conference mark.

Glenn led all players with 25 points after shooting 8-of-15 from the floor and six-of-six from the free-throw line. She also registered six rebounds and seven assists while playing in all 40 minutes.

Sophomore Seairra Barrett (Center Twp./Central Valley) recorded her third-straight double-double after totaling 13 points and a team-leading 11 rebounds (seven offensive). Junior Precious Martin (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) added 11 points, all in the first half, plus three rebounds and two steals.

Pitt-Johnstown started the first quarter on a 14-5 run that lasted a little more than four minutes. Cal U was able to score the next seven points, including five points from Glenn, to cut the deficit to 14-12. The Lady Cats fought back by ending the quarter on an 11-4 run to take a 25-16 lead at the start of the second quarter. The two teams opened the quarter by trading layups before the Vulcans closed the gap by scoring six of the seven points, including four free-throws by Glenn. Cal U then went on a 10-2 run over just under two minutes on five-of-five shooting to take its first lead of the game, 32-30. The Vulcans ended the half by scoring seven-consecutive points to take a 41-34 lead.

Cal U continued the run at start of the second half, taking a 49-38 lead capped by a layup from junior CeCe Dixon (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley). The Vulcans took their largest lead of the night, 55-43, with 2:22 remaining in the third quarter. The Lady Cats opened the fourth quarter with a 14-2 run after shooting six-of-11 from the field with eight points by sophomore Olivia McCabe to tie the game at 57-57. The two teams traded points for the last four minutes of the quarter before Glenn was able to hit a jumper as time expired to give the Vulcans a 65-63 victory.

Cal ended the game shooting 44.1 percent (26-of-59) from the floor, while Pitt-Johnstown shot at a 41.9 clip (26-of-62). The Vulcans finished with a 40-31 rebounding advantage and scored 14 points off turnovers.

Senior Jasmine Harper led the way for the Lady Cats with 21 points after shooting eight-of-12 from the field. McCabe posted a double-double after finishing with 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 21, with its home opener against Lock Haven in the Convocation Center at 1 p.m.
