Vulcans fall to Davis & Elkins on PK in OT, 1-0

Senators score GW after Vulcans were whistled for a handball in the box

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 4) – The Vulcans suffered a 1-0 overtime loss to Davis & Elkins after the game-winning goal was scored on a penalty kick at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility on Sunday night in non-conference play.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team falls to 5-4 this season and 3-1 at home. Meanwhile, Davis & Elkins improves to 2-5-2 overall after snapping a seven-game winless streak.

The Senators applied offensive pressure early in the first half, attempting three corner kicks in just over one minute. With 15 minutes left before halftime, D&E nearly scored on a rebound attempt before freshman Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium) made a save to keep the game scoreless. The Vulcans pressured the net in the final three minutes of the first half with two shots and three corner kicks.

In the 63rd minute, Cal U nearly took the lead on a free kick by senior Lubos Kubik (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Roosevelt (Iowa)) before the D&E goalkeeper made a leaping save. The Vulcans again nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 76th minute when freshman Mike Cummings (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) ripped an open shot attempt from inside the box that was saved by the Senators goalie.

The Vulcans were whistled for a handball inside the box just 1 minute, 18 seconds into overtime. Senators junior Lukas Grosse-Puppendahl scored the game-winning goal, his third of the season, on the ensuing penalty kick.

Exner registered seven saves in the loss and has now played in three overtime games since making his first career start on Sept. 19.

D&E finished with a 14-12 shot advantage, including nine shots in the first half, and held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. The teams were whistled for a combined for 29 fouls (19 first half) and were issued two yellow cards in the contest.

The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 7, when they host Wheeling Jesuit in non-conference play at 7 p.m.
