CALIFORNIA (Oct. 7) – Junior
Elliot Taylor (Monaca, Pa./Steel Valley) and senior
Jesse Scheirer (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) each recorded goals, as the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team earned a 2-0 non-conference victory against Wheeling Jesuit on Wednesday night.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 6-4-0 overall with three wins coming in the last four contests. Meanwhile, the Cardinals fall to 5-5-1 and have now lost four of their last five games.
Cal U had multiple scoring chances in the middle of the first half, as in the 25th minute a shot by Scheirer sailed high followed by a free kick from
Lubos Kubik (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Roosevelt) just missed the cross bar. The Vulcans were able to score first at the 32:57-mark after a corner kick from Kubik found the head of Scheirer and the rebound was eventually collected by Taylor for the goal. Wheeling Jesuit posted only two shots in the first half with none coming after the 21st minute and had a goal overturned because of an offsides inside the last minute.
In the second half, both teams traded blocked shots from inside the box before the Cardinals recorded their first shot on target of the contest in the 59th minute. Following a yellow card given to Wheeling Jesuit, Scheirer netted his team-leading sixth goal of the season at the 61:38-mark following a corner kick from Kubik, which was his second assist of the game, to increase the lead to 2-0. Kubik now leads the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) with eight assists this season. The Cardinals later failed to capitalize on their best scoring chance of the game after a shot by Manuel del Rio was kicked away by a Vulcan defender.
Freshman goalkeeper
Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium) tallied four saves to earn the first shutout of his career.
Cal U held a 13-10 advantage in shots and a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
The Vulcans return to PSAC action on Saturday, Oct. 10, when they travel to Millerville at 5:30 p.m.
