McCann collects hat trick in shutout at UPJ, 4-0

Senior standout records program's first hat trick since 2011 season

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (Oct. 21) – Senior Janelle McCann (Burlington, Vt./Tilton School) registered her first career hat trick on Wednesday afternoon, as the Vulcans earned a 4-0 win at Pitt-Johnstown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team improves to 8-5-3 overall behind a 7-4-3 mark in in league play. The Vulcans have out-scored opponents by a combined 11-3 margin during their current five-game unbeaten streak. Meanwhile, the Mountain Cats remain winless at 0-14-1 this season with a 0-13-1 record in conference action.

McCann registered the program's first hat trick since Carley Work accomplished the feat against East Stroudsburg on Sept. 24, 2011. McCann also moved into a tie with former teammate Chelsea Crockett (2011-14) for fourth all-time in school history with 34 goals.

The Vulcans took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when McCann scored on a breakaway following a punt to midfield by junior goalkeeper Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany), which marked the first point of her career.  McCann added to the lead less than a minute after halftime when she scored at the 45:55-mark following a pass from junior Selena Fushimi-Karns (Dublin, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne). A native of Vermont, McCann completed the hat trick in the 62nd minute when she scored off a cross by Fushimi-Karns.

Cal U added an insurance goal less than six minutes later when sophomore Kaeli Tuinstra (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) scored off an assist from senior Sam Spargo (Brookline, N.H./Hollis Brookline) at the 67:08-mark.

Jayes and sophomore Michaela Colon (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg), who made her season debut on Wednesday, combined for the shutout with Jayes recording three saves in 66 minutes.

The Vulcans held a sizeable 18-6 shot advantage and finished with an 11-1 edge in corner kicks.

Cal U returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 27, when it hosts No. 1 and undefeated Gannon at 6 p.m.
