CALIFORNIA (Oct. 27) – Facing the lone unblemished team in all NCAA divisions, the Vulcans suffered a 1-0 loss to No. 1 Gannon on Tuesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team falls to 8-6-3 overall and suffered its first loss since Oct. 3, which was a span of five games (4-0-1). The Vulcans enter the last weekend of the regular season in ninth place in the PSAC standings with an 8-5-3 mark and 24 points, which is one point shy of a three-way tie for sixth place. Meanwhile, the Lady Knights improve to 17-0-0 this season behind a 15-0-0 record in conference play.
The game was scoreless in the first half despite Gannon controlling play with a 7-0 shot advantage. Midway through the second half, two starting defenders for the Vulcans suffered injuries in a span of nearly 15 minutes that forced each from the game. Gannon took advantage of the makeshift defensive lineup at the 77:55-mark when two-time, PSAC Athlete of the Year Mandi Brueckner scored her league-leading 16th goal of the season.
The Lady Knights out-shot the Vulcans by an 11-2 margin in the game, while Cal U finished with a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Junior goalkeeper
Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) made five saves in the loss, as she surpassed her previous career high in saves.
Cal U closes out the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 31, when it hosts Lock Haven on Senior Day at 5 p.m.
