CALIFORNIA (Oct. 31) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team ended its regular season on Senior Day with a 1-0 victory against Lock Haven in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Saturday evening at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
With the win, the Vulcans ended the season with a 9-6-3 overall record behind an 8-5-3 mark in league play. Despite the win, Cal U falls one point back of the eighth seed in the PSAC Tournament and misses the post-season for the first time since 2008. Meanwhile, the Bald Eagles fall to 3-13-1 on the year with a 3-12-1 record in league play.
The Vulcans scored early in the first half when senior
Janelle McCann (Burlington, Vt./Tilton School) scored her sixth goal of the season at the 4:14-mark. The goal was her 35th goal of her career and moved her into sole possession of fourth place in program history. The goal was assisted by seniors
Emily Smith (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and
Sam Spargo (Brookline, N.H./Hollis Brookline), who both made their first career starts on Saturday. Later in the half, sophomore
Kira Carberry (Odenton, Md./Arundel) almost extended the lead when her shot hit the crossbar in the 29th minute.
Junior goalkeeper
Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) registered three saves while recording her sixth shutout of the year, which ties her career high.
The Vulcans held a 13-11 edge in shots and a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
