Vulcans post a shutout at Pitt-Johnstown, 1-0

Delgado scores first goal of the season in 5th minute; Exner registers second career shutout

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (Oct. 21) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team registered its third shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory at Pitt-Johnstown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 7-6-1 on the year with a 5-2-0 league mark. Meanwhile, the Mountain Cats fall to 1-14-0 overall behind a 0-9-0 conference play.

Cal U opened the contest with an early goal when sophomore Nathan Delgado (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) scored at the 4:12-mark after collecting a ball that went off the post. The Vulcans nearly extended the lead less than a minute later when senior Jesse Scheirer (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) hit the post with a shot. The first half ended with Pitt-Johnstown failing to record a shot on net. In the second period, the Mountain Cats were unable to post a shot on target until the 62nd minute and finished with only three total. In comparison, Cal U was able to collect 13 shots in the second half, but could not score.

Freshman goalkeeper Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium) posted three saves in 90 minutes to tally the second shutout of his career.

The Vulcans held a 21-9 advantage in shots and a 10-2 edge in corner kicks.

Cal U returns to action Saturday, Oct. 24, as it takes on Shippensburg at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility at 6 p.m.
