Men's Soccer holds off East Stroudsburg, 2-1

Taylor registers a goal and an assist in the win; Vulcans score twice in opening 10 minutes

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 2) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team scored twice in the opening 10 minutes of the contest to earn a 2-1 win against East Stroudsburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Friday night at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

With the victory, the Vulcans move to 5-3-0 on the year assisted behind a 3-2 record in league play. Meanwhile, the Warriors fall to 5-5 overall with a 2-4 record in the conference.

Cal U scored in the fifth minute of the game when junior Elliot Taylor (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) recorded his first goal of the year after deflecting a free kick from senior Lubos Kubik (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Roosevelt (Iowa)). With the assist, Kubik increases his PSAC-leading total to six assists. Minutes later, the Vulcans increased their lead to 2-0 at the 7:00-mark after freshman Eric Campbell (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) took a pass from Taylor and posted his fourth goal of the season, and third goal in two games. Cal U held East Stroudsburg without a shot in the first half and ended the period with a 2-0 lead.

In the second half, the Warriors tallied the lone goal of the second half in the 58th minute when Alex Kardos collected a redirected ball and scored in the bottom right corner of the net to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Freshman goalkeeper Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium) posted four saves while playing all 90 minutes in the victory.

Cal U held an 8-6 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks with all five corners coming in the second half.

The Vulcans return to action on Sunday, Oct. 4, when they host Davis & Elkins in non-conference play at 6 p.m.
