Cal U blanked in loss against Gannon, 4-0

Golden Knights benefit from penalty kick, 'own goal' in victory

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 17) – The Vulcans suffered a 4-0 loss to Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Saturday afternoon at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team falls to 6-6-1 overall behind a 3-4-1 conference mark. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights improve to 5-7-0 on the year with a 3-5-0 league record.

Ganon started the first half with an early goal at the 7:13-mark after a penalty kick from George Stannard following a handball in the box. The Golden Knights added an insurance goal in the 22nd minute with a goal from Tyler Martin off the foot of Hamza Mourchid after a give-and-go into the box. The Vulcans posted their best scoring chance on a penalty kick from senior Jesse Scheirer (Venitia, Pa./Peters Township), which was saved.

In the second period, Gannon scored again at the 61:38-mark after a Cal U defender slid to intercept a pass, but deflected the ball past the goalkeeper. The Golden Knights added their last goal on a shot from Jason Fox, who was over 30 yards out, beat the goalkeeper on the left side in the 73rd minute. Despite four corner kicks in the second half, the Vulcans were unable to avoid the shutout.

Freshman goalkeeper Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium) posted four saves in the loss after playing all 90 minutes.

Gannon held a 13-6 edge in shots, while Cal U posted a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 21, when they travel to face Pitt-Johnstown at 4 p.m.
