Cal U earns victory at Ohio Dominican, 2-1

Vulcans have scored seven goals during current four-game unbeaten streak

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Oct. 15) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to four games with a 2-1 victory at Ohio Dominican on Thursday night in non-conference play.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 7-5-3 overall behind a 6-1-1 mark in road games. Cal U has scored seven goals during the unbeaten streak after being held scoreless in the previous five contests. Meanwhile, Ohio Dominican, which ranks third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) standings, falls to 7-6 this season

Cal U took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when junior Selena Fushimi-Karns (Dublin, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) scored her third goal of the year off a pass from senior Janelle McCann (Burlington, Vt./Tilton School) following an ODU turnover. The Panthers nearly tied the score seven minutes later when a shot attempt hit off the crossbar before the Vulcans took 1-0 lead into halftime.

ODU eventually tied the game at 1-1 in the 53rd minute when Emily Riviello collected her second goal of the season. Fushimi-Karns looked to give the Vulcans the lead at the 70:46-mark before her shot attempt also deflected off the crossbar. Cal U later took a 2-1 lead when freshman Aly Greenstein (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Technical) registered the game-winning goal in 73rd minute with assists from senior Kara Novotny (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) and junior Danielle Kearns (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes).

Junior Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) totaled eight saves while earning her 25th career victory (44 starts).

In the loss, the Panthers finished with a sizeable 21-9 shot advantage after attempting double-digit shots in both periods. Ohio Dominican also posted a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Vulcans are idle for nearly a week before returning to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Wednesday, Oct. 21, when they travel to face Pitt-Johnstown at 1:30 p.m.
