Men's Soccer earns tie at Mercyhurst, 2-2

Scheirer scores twice in six-minute span early in second half

ERIE, Pa. (Oct. 13) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team scored twice in just over six minutes to earn a 2-2 double-overtime tie at Mercyhurst in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Monday afternoon.

With the tie, the Vulcans move to 6-5-1 on the year behind a 3-3-1 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the defending-league champion Lakers move to 5-7-1 overall with a 5-1-1 conference record and have recorded a point in three-straight games.

In the first half, Cal U posted the opening five shots of the game before Mercyhurst took a 1-0 lead at the 16:44-mark when Michael Dirienzo scored on a mishandled ball. After recording five shots in the initial 16 minutes, the Vulcans were only able to record three more in the first half.

Early in the second half, senior Jesse Scheirer (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) netted his seventh goal of the season in the 53rd minute after heading a cross from freshman Keion Randolph (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) who received a pass from junior Elliot Taylor (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley). Just minutes later at the 58:16 mark, Scheirer took a pass from freshman Eric Campbell (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) and scored his second goal of the game to give the Vulcans a 2-1 lead. The Lakers tied the game in the 74th minute after Ruaidhri McGuire placed a pass to Thomas Davis, who scored his third goal of the season.

The first overtime period saw three shots, all from Mercyhurst, including one off a corner kick, while neither team could score in the second overtime as three shots were posted with only one on target.

Freshman goalkeeper Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium) recorded four saves after playing all 110 minutes in the tie.

Cal U held a 17-15 edge in shots, while both teams registered four corner kicks.

The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Oct. 17, when they host Gannon at 2 p.m.
