CALIFORNIA (Sept. 28) – The Vulcans allowed a pair of goals in the first half on Sunday afternoon before suffering a 2-1 loss against Chowan in non-conference action at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team falls to 2-5-1 overall. Meanwhile, Chowan, which competes as an independent, improves to 5-2 this season.
The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when freshman Brandon Myers scored his first goal of the season off a corner kick. Chowan added to its lead on a penalty kick at the 32:58-mark when fellow freshman Christian Funes tallied his fifth goal of the year.
Following halftime, the Vulcans trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the 56th minute when senior
Jeffrey Kyei (Tübingen, Germany/SIT Tübingen) scored off a cross from classmate
Brad Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) from eight yards out.
Senior goalkeeper
Shane Donovan (Pipersville, Pa./Central Bucks East) made a pair of saves while playing all 90 minutes for the eight-consecutive game. Chowan goalkeeper Marco Lujan finished with three saves in the win on Sunday.
Cal U out-shot Chowan by a 12-7 margin and finished with a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Vulcans return to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Tuesday, Sept. 30, when they travel to face Pitt-Johnstown at 1:30 p.m.
