CALIFORNIA (Sept. 27) – The Vulcans scored 28-unanswered points in the first half on Saturday afternoon before claiming a 34-16 victory over Edinboro at Adamson Stadium in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania football team improves to 3-1 overall with a 2-1 mark in league action. The Vulcans have now won 10-consecutvie meetings against the Fighting Scots, including six-straight at home. Meanwhile, Edinboro remains winless this season at 0-4 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
The Vulcans recorded a season-high seven sacks in the victory, including 3.5 sacks by sophomore defensive lineman
Jawan Turner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills). Despite scoring a pair of rushing touchdowns, Edinboro finished the game with negative-12 rushing yards on 24 attempts. The Vulcans limited the Fighting Scots to less than 20 yards, including fourth three-and-outs, on six drives.
Junior quarterback
James Harris (Woodstock, Ga./Etowah) finished with 260 passing yards on 18-of-31 attempts and a pair of touchdowns. Harris, who completed passes to seven different receivers, totaled nearly 200 passing yards on 14-of-21 attempts in the first half.
Cal U scored on the game's opening possession when Harris connected with junior running back
Derrick Fiore (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) on a screen for an eight-yard touchdown on third down. On their next possession, the Vulcans capped an 84-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run by senior running back
Terrell Roberson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) with 3:16 left in the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, Edinboro was forced into a three-and-out following a sack by redshirt freshman defensive lineman
Acantay Patton (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell). The Vulcans started the ensuing drive from near midfield and capped an 11-play drive with another two-yard rushing score by Roberson, his fifth in the last two games. The Fighting Scots were again limited to three plays on their next drive after a third-down sack by Turner. On the opening play of the Cal U drive, Harris found sophomore wide receiver
Garry Brown (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville South) for a 48-yard touchdown to stretch the lead to 28-0 with 4:39 left before halftime.
The teams traded field position for the majority of the third quarter before the Vulcans managed a 35-yard field goal by senior
Cody Nuzzo (Bradford, Pa./Bradford) with 3:42 left in the quarter. On the drive, Harris connected with Fiore for a 33-yard gain while facing third-and-24 and Fiore later set-up the field goal with a 17-yard run on third-and 20.
In the opening minute of the fourth quarter, Edinboro senior quarterback Cody Harris capped a 79-yard drive with a one-yard rushing touchdown. The Vulcans recovered the ensuing onside kick and added a 36-yard field goal by Nuzzo with 9:21 left to play. The Fighting Scots followed with a 91-yard touchdown drive that was capped by a two-yard run by Harris with 4:15 remaining. Edinboro added the final points of the game with 1:50 left to play when a blocked punt went through the end zone.
Junior defensive back
Chaz Veal (Cleveland, Ohio/Hamilton) led the team with seven tackles (six solo), while junior defensive lineman
Kenny Wilkins (Washington, Pa./Trinity) added six stops (three solo) and 2.0 TFL. Turner finished with five tackles (three solo), 4.0 TFL, 3.5 sacks and two pass break-ups.
The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Oct. 4, when they travel to nearby Greensburg, Pennsylvania, to face Seton Hill at 3 p.m.
