CALIFORNIA (April 26) – The No. 14 Vulcans earned a pair of run-rule victories over Slippery Rock, winning 11-1 and 11-3 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action, Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Lilley Field.

The sweep extend the longest active winning streak in NCAA Division II to 25 games and improves the California University of Pennsylvania softball team to 29-4 overall with a perfect 22-0 mark in PSAC West play this season. Meanwhile, The Rock falls to 11-13 in league play and 16-23 overall.

In Game 1, the Vulcans plated five runs on five hits in the first inning to take a commanding early lead. Senior catcher Natalie Wideman (Mississauga, Ontario/Streetsville Secondary) started the inning with a single and sophomore first baseman Lindsay Reicoff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) then drew a walk. Senior second baseman Shelby Lia (Whitby, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson) brought both home with a three-run home run to give Cal U the lead. The Vulcans tallied two more in the frame when senior designated player Stephani Ellis (Vancouver, British Columbia/Prince of Wales Secondary) and sophomore third baseman Natalya Smarra (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox) connected for back-to-back singles and were driven in on a third-straight single by junior center fielder Shelby Heyd (Innisfil, Ontario/Nantyr Shores Secondary), 5-0.

Cal U added to its lead in the second when Reicoff lifted a solo home run well over the left field fence. Junior shortstop Breanna Morris (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) reached on a single, advanced to third on a dropped fly ball and scored on a Smarra single to push the lead to 7-0.

Reicoff continued to swing the hot bat and added a two-out RBI-single in the third to increase the lead to 8-0, but a solo home run in the fourth by Slippery Rock put the score at 8-1 after four and a half innings. After stranding runners on second and third in the fourth inning, the Vulcans put runners on first and second to lead off the fifth. Reicoff put the finishing touch on an impressive game with a three-run home run to give Cal U a 11-1 run-rule shortened win.

All nine hitters collected at least one hit with Reicoff finishing 3-for-3 with two home runs, five RBI and five runs scored. Lia added a home run and three RBI, while Smarra ended the game 3-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored.

Sophomore Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) earned the win for the Vulcans. Sagl (18-2) limited The Rock to one run (earned) on four hits and struck out 10 batters in only 5.0 innings of work. Slippery Rock's Emily Lobdell (9-9) was saddled with the loss after allowing 11 runs (eight earned) on 13 hits in 4.0-plus innings pitched.

In Game 2, The Rock plated three runs in the first inning to take an early lead, but the Vulcans responded with runs in each of the opening three innings. The Vulcans tallied two runs in the first when Morris smacked a two-run home run to pull Cal U within one. Heyd led off the second inning off with a double and was driven in when freshman Megan Jahoda (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) delivered a RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.

The Vulcans took their first lead of the game in the third inning when Smarra served an RBI single into right field to score Morris, and Jahoda smacked a two-run home run over the center field fence to give Cal U a 6-3 lead. After the Vulcans were held scoreless in the fourth inning, the team tacked on five runs in the fifth to earn a second run-rule win. Heyd led the frame off with a solo home run and the next four batters reached base, including a two-run double by Reicoff to put the Cal U on the brink of a victory at 10-3. Reicoff advanced to third on a ground-out and scored on a wild pitch to secure an 11-3 win for the Vulcans.

Freshman Kaity Davis (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) settled in after allowing three runs on four hits in the first. Davis (11-2) scattered six more hits over the next four innings and struck out two to earn a complete-game victory. The Rock's Carly DeRose (6-11) took the loss after she allowed 11 runs (10 earned) on 12 hits in 4.1 innings pitched.

Jahoda led the Vulcans at the plate in Game 2, finishing 3-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Morris and Reicoff added identical lines of 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, with Morris connecting for a home run.
