Cal U powers to sweep of Edinboro

CALIFORNIA (April 2) – Senior second baseman Shelby Lia (Whitby, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson) and junior shortstop Breanna Morris (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) both tallied six RBI on Wednesday afternoon, as the Vulcans posted a pair of run-rule victories over Edinboro at Lilley Field in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action, winning 12-1 and 11-2.

With the sweep, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team improves to 11-4 overall with a 4-0 record in divisional play. Meanwhile, Edinboro drops to 5-9 this season while playing its first games since March 20 and opens league action with a 0-2 mark.

In Game 1, the Vulcans scored all of their runs in the opening three innings, including seven in the bottom of the second. Morris finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run scored and freshman center fielder Kaity Finley (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) went 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. Junior right fielder Shelby Heyd (Innisfil, Ontario/Nantyr Shores Secondary) and sophomore third baseman Natalya Smarra (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox) each collected a pair of hits and scored once. Lia recorded four RBI behind a three-run homer and senior catcher Natalie Wideman (Mississauga, Ontario/Streetsville Secondary) scored three runs.

Cal U took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI ground-out and a two-out RBI single by Morris. The Vulcans batted around in the second and benefited from a fielding error in the inning, scoring five unearned runs. After a pair of leadoff singles and a sacrifice bunt, Finley collected an RBI single before Wideman reached on a run-scoring fielding error. Following a two-out walk loaded the bases, Morris and freshman designated player Megan Jahoda (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) delivered back-to-back, two-run singles. Smarra later posted an RBI single in her second at-bat of the inning.

In the third, Lia belted a three-run homer – her first of the year – to stretch the lead to 12-0. The Fighting Scots avoided the shutout with a solo homer by third baseman Brooke Callaghan in the top of the fifth.

Sophomore Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) earned her fourth-straight victory with a dominating one-hit performance. She tossed 4.0 scoreless innings and set a season high with 10 strikeouts while not issuing a walk in 4.0 innings (51 pitches). Sagl allowed only three Edinboro batters to place a ball in play, recording 10 of her 13 outs via strikeouts.

Edinboro starter Kalet Lenart (3-4) suffered the loss after being roughed up for nine runs (four earned) on seven hits in 1.2 innings (46 pitches).

In Game 2, all nine starters in the lineup for the Vulcans collected at least one hit with five players posting multi-hit games. Morris finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and one run scored and Lia went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Wideman tallied three hits and scored twice, while sophomore first baseman Lindsay Reicoff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) posted two hits and two runs scored. Heyd finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and one run scored.

Cal U batted around in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs on five-straight hits with one out. Following a double by Wideman, Reicoff lined an RBI single through the middle before Morris and Heyd later collected back-to-back RBI singles. The Fighting Scots countered in the third with a two-run homer by first baseman Haley Struebing to trim the deficit to 3-2.

In the fourth, the Vulcans scored four runs with two outs and batted around for the second time in the game to take a 7-2 lead. Lia belted a two-run homer, the 29th of her career, before five-straight runners reached base with two outs. Heyd posted an RBI infield single before Erica Vallecorsa (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) collected an infield single with the bases loaded.

Cal U sealed the run-rule victory in the bottom of the sixth by scoring four runs, including three unearned runs. Senior Stephani Ellis (Vancouver, British Columbia/Prince of Wales Secondary) delivered a pinch-hit RBI double before scoring on a two-out throwing error. Morris followed with a two-run single to center field with the bases loaded.

Freshman Kaity Davis (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) posted her third-consecutive victory to improve to 4-2 this season. She allowed two runs (both earned) on five hits and tied her season high with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings (92 pitches). Fighting Scots starter Samantha Weaver (0-5) was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs on five hits in just 0.1 inning pitched.

Cal U is scheduled to return to action on Friday, April 4, when it travels to face Mercyhurst for a doubleheader in Erie, Pa., starting at 2:30 p.m.
