Game 2 Box Score EDINBORO, Pa. (April 19) – The No. 22 California University of Pennsylvania softball team earned a sweep of Edinboro Saturday afternoon to push its winning streak to 21 games, winning 16-1 and 10-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
The Vulcans improve to 18-0 in conference play and 25-4 overall and now boast a 33-game PSAC West winning streak that dates back to last season. The last time Cal U lost a divisional game was on April 3, 2013. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots fall to 14-18 overall and 9-11 in the PSAC West.
In Game 1, the Vulcans exploded for 15 runs on 12 hits in the final two innings to earn a 16-1 win.
Cal U initially got on the board in the second inning when junior center fielder
Shelby Heyd (Innisfil, Ontario/Nantyr Shores Secondary) delivered an RBI single that scored junior shortstop
Breanna Morris (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central). Edinboro evened the score in the third inning, but neither team recorded a run in the next two innings to send the game into the sixth inning tied at 1-1.
The Vulcans put runners on first and second with no outs to open the sixth inning, but a pair of fielder's choice plays left Cal U with runners on the corners and two outs. Freshman right fielder
Megan Jahoda (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) broke the tie with an RBI single and senior catcher
Natalie Wideman (Mississauga, Ontario/Streetsville Secondary) plated two more with a triple and scored on a wild pitch to put the Vulcans up 5-1.
After the Fighting Scots were retired in order in the sixth, the Vulcans pulled away with 11 runs on nine hits in the seventh to take a 16-1 lead. The first four Cal U batters reached base, including an RBI double by senior designated player
Stephani Ellis (Vancouver, British Columbia/Prince of Wales Secondary) and a two-run home run by sophomore third baseman
Natalya Smarra (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox). The Vulcans nearly batted through the order twice, sending 26 batters to the plate in the seventh.
Sophomore pitcher
Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) earned the win for the Vulcans. She tossed 6.0 innings and limited the Fighting Scots to one run (earned) on four hits, while striking out nine. Edinboro pitcher Samantha Weaver (3-7) took the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits in 6.0 innings of work.
Every batter in the Vulcan lineup recorded an RBI in the win, including two pinch hitters. Wideman, Morris and Smarra each collected three hits in the game. Smarra finished the game with a game-high three RBI, while Wideman and senior second baseman
Shelby Lia (Whitby, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson) each drove in a pair of runs.
In Game 2, the Vulcans plated runs in five different innings to earn a 10-3 win and the doubleheader sweep.
Sophomore first baseman
Lindsay Reicoff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley), who was the only play not to record a base-hit in game one, connected on a two-run home run in the first inning to give Cal U a 2-0 lead early in the game. Edinboro responded with a three-run home run in the bottom half of the inning to take their first lead of the day at 3-2.
After a scoreless second, the Vulcans reclaimed the lead with three runs when Morris drove in Reicoff with an RBI double and Smarra drove in a pair with an RBI single to put Cal U up 5-3 in the third inning. Cal U added to its lead in the fourth when Lia delivered an RBI bunt-single and Morris smacked her second RBI double of the game to give the team a 7-3 lead. The Vulcans tacked on two more runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to extend their winning streak to 21 games this season.
Sagl (16-2) earned the win in Game 2 after tossing 3.1 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief while striking out four. Freshman pitcher
Kaity Davis (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) made the start and pitched 2.2 innings, allowing three runs (all earned) on four hits.
Reicoff led the Vulcans at the plate in Game 2, finishing 4-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and four runs scored. Lia and Morris each tallied a pair of hits with Morris connecting for two doubles and two RBI.
Cal U will look to extend its winning streak on Monday, April 21, when it heads to Erie, Pa., to take on Gannon for a PSAC West twinbill. First pitch of Game 1 is set for 2:30 p.m.
