The Vulcans improve to 12-0 in the PSAC West, 19-4 overall and extend the conference's longest active winning streak to 15 games. Meanwhile, the Griffins fall to 16-12 overall and 6-10 in league play in their inaugural season in the PSAC West.
In Game 1, the Vulcans connected for three home runs and scored a run in each inning in their 12-0 run-rule win in five innings.
Cal U took an early 1-0 lead on a Seton Hill error and senior second baseman
Shelby Lia (Whitby, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson) tacked on two more with a two-run home run to put the Vulcans up 3-0 before the Griffins came to the plate. The Vulcans added to their total in the second with five runs, highlighted by a three-run home run by sophomore first baseman
Lindsay Reicoff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and a RBI triple from junior shortstop
Breanna Morris (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) to take an 8-0 lead. Cal U threatened to add to the total before the inning ended, as it loaded the bases with one out before an unassisted lineout double play ended the frame.
Cal U continued to add to its lead when Lia delivered a RBI single down the right field line in the third and senior designated player
Stephani Ellis (Vancouver, British Columbia/Prince of Wales Secondary) connected on her third home run of the season in the fourth inning. The Vulcans tacked on two more runs in the fifth when they loaded the bases with no outs. Freshman
Megan Jahoda (Buchanan, N.Y/Hendrick Hudson) added a pinch-hit RBI infield single to drive in one run, while a wild pitch scored the other run.
Sophomore pitcher
Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) held Seton Hill in check throughout the game and only allowed the Griffins to advance a runner in scoring position just once. Sagl (12-2) tossed all five innings for the complete-game shutout and limited Seton Hill to four hits while striking out five. Griffin pitcher Christine Henderson (8-5) was chased after 1.1 innings pitched and allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits, while being charged with the loss.
Five Vulcans ended the game with multiple hits. Lia went 3-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored, while Reicoff finished with a similar line going 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored. Senior catcher
Natalie Wideman (Mississauga, Ontario/Streetsville Secondary) finished with three hits and three runs scored, while Morris and Ellis each added a pair of hits and a RBI.
In Game 2, the Vulcans used timely hitting to earn the 4-1 win to complete the doubleheader sweep on Sunday.
Seton Hill scored its first run of the day in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead, but the Griffins stranded a runner at third when Morris made a diving stop up the middle to prevent any further damage. Cal U responded quickly in the third inning. With runners on first and second, Lia delivered a two-out RBI single to tie the game and Morris followed suit with a two-run double to give the Vulcans a 3-1 lead. Morris added to her day in the fifth when she connected on another two-out RBI double to put Cal U up 4-1 in the fifth inning.
Freshman pitcher
Kaity Davis (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) worked around the second inning run, but ran into trouble when Seton Hill loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth inning. Sagl entered the game in relief and stranded the runners to preserve the Vulcan lead and retired the side in the seventh to secure the win for the team.
Davis (7-2) tossed 5.2 innings and allowed one run (unearned) on eight hits to earn the win. Sagl earned her first save of the season after pitching 1.1 scoreless innings of relief. Seton Hill pitcher Amanda Huff (4-5) took the loss after allowing four runs on 10 hits while striking out nine.
Morris led Cal U at the plate in Game 2, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBI and a stolen base. Lia and freshman
Kaity Finley (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) each had two hits and scored a run, while Lia added an RBI and a stolen base to her line.
