Softball splits regular-season finale vs UPJ

Vulcans to face West Chester in PSAC Tournament; Davis, McCutcheon belt solo homers on Sunday

CALIFORNIA (May 3) – The California (PA) softball team closed out its regular season with a doubleheader split versus Pitt-Johnstown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Sunday afternoon at Lilley Field, suffering an 8-3 loss in Game 1 before capturing an 11-3 run-rule victory in Game 2.

NOTES
• The Vulcans (19-27, 14-14) matched their divisional record from last season while eclipsing their overall win total on Sunday.
• Cal finished fourth in the PSAC West standings and will open the PSAC Tournament against West Chester – the fifth seed in the PSAC East – on Wednesday, May 6.
• The 2026 PSAC Tournament will be played at Grand Slam Park in Binghamton, New York, with the facility boasting four all-turf fields and lighting, as construction at the complex was completed in 2023.
• Cal used five pitchers in the twinbill on Sunday with none working more than 3.0 innings.

GAME 1
• Cal tied the score in the bottom of the fourth before UPJ tallied four-unanswered runs.
• Sophomore Kirra Davis and freshman Alexa Edmunds both registered two hits and one RBI in the contest.
• Davis belted her team-leading 12th homer of the spring, which ties her for 10th-most in single-season school history.
• The Vulcans took the lead in the first on a solo homer by Davis before the Mountain Cats responded with a three-run homer with two outs in the second inning, 3-1.
• In the fourth, Cal tied the score at 3-3 on back-to-back RBI singles with the bases loaded by Edmunds and freshman right fielder Savanna Benish.
• UPJ capitalized on a two-out throwing error in the top of the fifth, as the next batter belted a three-run homer.
• The Mountain Cats scored seven of their eight runs in the game with two outs and six runs came via home runs.
• Senior Megan Nidoh (1-4) suffered the loss after allowing three runs (all unearned) in 2.0 innings of relief.

GAME 2
• Cal earned its first run-rule victory in its final game of the regular season.
• Freshman second baseman Indyana Bolyea and freshman catcher Hadassah Leverette both tallied two hits, one RBI and two runs scored.
• Senior first baseman Makaylia Schlosser collected two hits and two runs scored.
• UPJ took a 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI single in the first before Cal scored seven runs on four hits, four walks and one error in the second inning.
• Leverette collected a bases-loaded RBI single before Benish, Bolyea and Davis were issued bases-loaded walks.
• Sophomore third baseman Makayla Jerin followed with a two-run single, 7-1.
• The Mountain Cats scored two runs in the third after recording three-straight hits with two outs before the Vulcans answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
• Davis delivered an RBI single and Bolyea later scored on a sacrifice fly.
• In the fourth, sophomore Carissa Ring delivered a pinch-hit RBI single with two outs to extend the lead to a 10-3 margin.
• Sophomore Amarah McCutcheon secured the run-rule victory with a homer to leadoff the bottom of the sixth – her 11th of the year.
• She is now tied with Becky Mezyk (2003-06) for ninth all-time in school history with 23 homers in just two seasons.
• Senior starting pitcher Cheyenne Beayon (2-3) earned the victory after allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits in 3.0 innings (52 pitches).
• Freshman Abigail Singer registered the save with 3.0 scoreless innings of relief.

NEXT
• Cal returns to the PSAC Tournament for the sixth-consecutive year when it faces West Chester on Wednesday in Binghamton, New York, at 10 a.m.
• The Vulcans last faced the Golden Rams in 2018 during the PSAC Tournament.
