Game 2 Box ScoreINDIANA, Pa. (April 12) -- The California University of Pennsylvania softball team earned a doubleheader sweep at IUP, winning by scores of 5-2 and 11-1, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action Saturday afternoon.
The victory extends the Vulcans winning streak to 13 games and improves the team to 10-0 in conference play and 17-4 overall. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks fall to 14-10 overall and 7-5 in the PSAC West.
In Game 1, IUP tallied a pair of runs on a home run in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead and limited the Vulcans to one hit through the opening two innings. Cal U took advantage of a couple miscues by IUP to even the game at 2-2 in the third inning. Senior designated player
Stephani Ellis (Vancouver, British Columbia/Prince of Wales Secondary) was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a ground-out. After senior catcher
Natalie Wideman (Mississauga, Ontario/Streetsville Secondary) was hit by a pitch, Ellis scored as Wideman stole second and advanced to third on an errant throw by the catcher. The next batter, sophomore first baseman
Lindsay Reicoff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley), drove in Wideman with a RBI single to tie the score.
The Vulcans carried momentum into the fourth inning when junior shortstop
Breanna Morris (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) led the inning off with a double and scored when Ellis connected for a double of her own to put Cal U up 3-2 after three and a half innings played.
After a scoreless fifth, Ellis reached base to lead off the sixth inning off when she was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. After she advanced to second on a wild pitch, Wideman connected on a RBI double to give the Vulcans a 4-2 lead.
Cal U tacked on another insurance run in the sixth, but it was more than enough for sophomore pitcher
Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar), who shutdown the Crimson Hawks after allowing the home run in the first inning. Sagl (11-2) pitched a complete game and limited IUP to two runs on four hits, while striking out 11 batters (126 pitches). Crimson Hawk pitcher Alexa Campbell (5-6) was charged with the loss after Cal U scored five runs on eight hits.
Wideman, Morris and senior second baseman
Shelby Lia (Whitby, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson) all finished with two hits to lead the Vulcans at the plate, while Ellis finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.
In game 2, the Vulcans powered their way to an 11-1 run-rule shortened win in five innings behind an eight-run fourth inning.
Cal U scored the game's opening run in the second inning on a solo home run by Morris. The Vulcans plated two more runs when freshman leftfielder
Erica Vallecorsa (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) delivered a RBI single and Wideman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give Cal U a 3-0 lead.
The Vulcans did most of their damage in the fourth inning. Ellis led the inning off with a walk and was driven in when junior
Shelby Heyd (Innisfil, Ontario/Nantyr Shores Secondary) smacked a home run to extend the team's lead to 5-0. After Vallecorsa and Wideman each reached base after being hit by pitches, Lia drove in Vallecorsa with a RBI double to give the Vulcans a 6-0 lead. Morris, the next batter, loaded the bases with a walk and every runner advanced on a wild pitch, scoring Wideman to make the score 7-0.
Sophomore third baseman
Natalya Smarra (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox), Ellis and Heyd each added to the Cal U lead with RBI base hits to increase the Vulcan lead to 11-0. IUP plated a two-out run in the fifth inning, but left the bases loaded and could not score the necessary runs to continue the contest.
Freshman pitcher
Kaity Davis (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) tossed all five innings to earn the win. Davis (6-2) limited the Crimson Hawks to one run on four hits and struck out three batters (103 pitches). IUP pitcher Amanda Spindler (6-2) took the loss after she allowed nine runs on six hits in 3.2 innings pitched.
Heyd led the Vulcans at the plate in Game 2, going 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Smarra chipped in a 2-for-3 effort with an RBI and two runs scored, while Morris finished 1-for-2 with a home run and two runs scored.
Cal U is back in action tomorrow, Sunday, April 13, when it heads to Greensburg, Pa., to take on Seton Hill in a make-up from games originally scheduled for yesterday, Friday, April 11. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
