SALEM, Va. (March 16) – The Vulcans closed the Salem Invitational on Sunday with a pair of one-run victories, posting a 1-0 victory against Le Moyne (N.Y.) and 2-1 win over Concord.
With the wins, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team improves to 7-4 overall and finishes the weekend in Virginia with a 4-2 mark.
Against Le Moyne (6-4), the Vulcans scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman center fielder
Kaity Finley (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) led off the inning with a triple and later scored on a squeeze bunt by senior catcher
Natalie Wideman (Mississauga, Ontario/Streetsville Secondary).
Sophomore
Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) tossed a four-hit, complete-game shutout against the Dolphins. She tied her season high with eight strikeouts and issued no walks, while facing just three batters over the minimum in 7.0 innings. Le Moye senior Sarah Harrison suffered the loss after allowing one run (earned) on four hits and no walks in 6.0 innings of work.

Stephani Ellis (Vancouver, British Columbia/Prince of Wales Secondary) collected two of the team's four hits, finishing 2-for-2 while batting No. 8 in the lineup.
Against Concord (14-6), the Vulcans scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second after the Mountain Lions took a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo homer by first baseman Lacey McDougall. In the second, Ellis reached on an error and advanced to second on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI double by freshman left fielder
Megan Jahoda (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson). After an error allowed Jahoda to advance to third, she scored on a sacrifice fly by junior right fielder
Shelby Heyd (Innisfil, Ontario/Nantyr Shores Secondary).
The Mountain Lions failed to advance a runner into scoring position after the first inning. Freshman
Kaity Davis (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) recorded the complete-game victory, yielding one run (earned) on three hits and one walk in 7.0 innings. Concord sophomore Allie Reid was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs (both unearned) on eight hits and no walks in 6.0 innings on Sunday.
Finley went 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot, marking her team-leading fourth multi-hit game of the season.
The Vulcans are idle for nearly a week before opening Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Friday, March 21, with a home doubleheader against league-newcomer Seton Hill at 2:30 p.m.
