SALEM, Va. (March 15) – The California University of Pennsylvania softball team took a split at the Salem Invitational for the second-straight day on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 7-2 contest to Virginia-Wise before posting a 2-1 win against West Virginia State.
With the split, the Vulcans moves to 5-4 this season.
Against UVa-Wise (11-5), freshman
Kaity Davis (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) suffered the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits in 4.2 innings pitched. Cavaliers' freshman Taylor Brandts earned the victory after yielding two runs (both earned) on two hits and three walks in 5.1 innings of work.
The Cavaliers scored on an error in the top of the second before adding three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. First baseman Kristina Romualdo and catcher Charity Lawson belted back-to-back homers in the fifth and UVa-Wise scored a pair of unearned runs in the sixth following a two-out error.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Vulcans answered with their only runs of the game on a two-run homer by senior catcher
Natalie Wideman (Mississauga, Ontario/Streetsville Secondary), her second of the year.
Against West Virginia State (5-4), sophomore
Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) earned a complete-game victory after allowing one run (earned) and scattering three hits over 7.0 innings. Yellow Jackets' sophomore Anna Eggleston yielded two runs (both earned) on five hits and four walks while tossing a complete game.
Cal U drew back-to-back walks in the top of the first before sophomore first baseman
Lindsay Reicoff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) delivered a two-run double. The Yellow Jackets countered with a solo homer by designated player Sydney Kaplan to lead off the bottom of the third.
Reicoff finished with two of the team's five hits, going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. The Vulcans left seven runners on base in the victory, including four in scoring position.
Cal U closes out play at the Salem Invitational tomorrow, Sunday, March 16, with games against Le Moyne (N.Y.) and Concord, starting at 11 a.m.
