No. 23 Vulcans rally past Kutztown, 74-66

Cal U scores 30 points off turnovers

CALIFORNIA (Dec. 17) – Senior guard Kaitlynn Fratz (Accident, Md./Northern Garrett) tied her season-high with 22 points as she led the No. 23 Vulcans to a 74-66 victory over Kutztown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play on Wednesday evening at the Convocation Center.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 9-1 overall and 6-0 in PSAC play. Meanwhile, Kutztown falls to 3-5 overall, behind a 2-4 mark in league play.

For the second consecutive night, Fratz led all scorers as she scored 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including making 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. The Maryland native has now scored in double-figures in five straight contests and was one of four Vulcan players to score in double-figures. Classmate Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier ) tallied 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting to go along with six rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks. Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) scored 11 points while Irina Kukolj (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) chipped in with 10 points, nine rebounds (five offensive), one assist, and one steal.

In the first half, the Golden Bears opened the game on an 8-0 run after a Kelsey Watson jumper with 17:49 to play in the half. Cal U fought back and cut the lead to 14-7 after a Fratz  jumper just over three minutes later. Nicole Donahue extended the Kutztown lead to 20-12 with a layup at the 9:43-mark.Mahady pulled the Vulcans to within five at 26-21 after a jumper with 4:49 left to play before halftime. A CeCe Dixon (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) layup and Fratz jumper cut the Golden Bear lead to 33-28 at halftime.

Cal U took its first lead of the game at the 18:19-mark of the second half after Fratz connected on a jumper to give the Vulcans a 34-33 lead. The jumper helped key a 15-1 Cal U run to begin the second half as the Vulcans took a 43-34 lead with 15:20 to play. Cal U shot 70 percent (7-of-10) and forced Kutztown into five turnovers during the run. Fratz scored seven of her 22 points during the run and was one of four Vulcan players to score during the nearly five minute stretch.

Over the next several minutes, Cal U kept the lead between eight and 11 points before the Vulcans extended their lead to 53-41 after a Mahady jumper with 11:28 remaining. A Kukolj free-throw at the 7:21-mark gave Cal U its largest lead of the game at 62-49. Kutztown fought back and trimmed the Cal U lead to five (66-61) with a 12-4 run over a six minute stretch late in the second half before the Vulcans made their free-throws to close out the win.

For the game, the Vulcans shot 43.8 percent (28-of-64), including 66.7 percent (18-of-27) from the charity stripe. Meanwhile, the Golden Bears shot 40.3 percent (25-of-62), while connecting on 73.7 percent (14-of-19) of their free-throws. Kutztown held a 46-36 rebounding margin, including 20 offensive rebounds. Cal U, however, forced 22 turnovers and held a commanding 30-9 edge in points off turnovers.

Cal U continues PSAC Crossover play when it travels to face Mansfield on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 1 p.m.
