Vulcans post largest margin of victory since 2012-13 season

MANSFIELD, Pa. (Dec. 20) – Behind a balanced offensive performance, the No. 23 California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team cruised to an 83-43 victory at Mansfield on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 10-1 overall and extend their winning streak to six games. Cal U also remains tied for first in the PSAC West standings with a 7-0 mark in league play. The 40-point margin of victory was the largest for the Vulcans since registering a 47-point win over Glenville State early in the 2012-13 season. Meanwhile, the Mountaineers fall to 1-9 this season behind a 0-7 record in conference action.

Freshman forward Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) led the team with a season-high 16 points on 6-of-11 attempts from the floor and four-of-six from the free-throw line. She also set a season high with six rebounds while playing 18 minutes off the bench.

Senior Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) finished with 11 points on five-of-eight shooting and added three rebounds and two steals while playing just 22 minutes, which is 10 minutes less than her season average. Sophomore Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) and freshman Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) both added 10 points in the victory on Saturday. Barrett also led the team with nine rebounds (six offensive) while playing 15 minutes off the bench.

Each of the 10 active players for the game scored at least one basket at Mansfield. Senior Irina Kukolj (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) posted nine rebounds, four assists and two steals, while sophomore CeCe Dixon (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) tallied eight points off the bench. Junior Brittany Nelson (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) tied for the team lead with nine rebounds while playing only 14 minutes.

The Vulcans scored the opening two baskets of the game before being held scoreless for over 2 minutes, 30 seconds. Cal U then mounted a 14-6 run, making 8-of-11 shots over nearly seven minutes, to take an 18-6 lead with 10:35 left in the first half. Following a layup by the Mountaineers, the Vulcans went on a 12-2 rally to take a 30-10 lead following back-to-back baskets by sophomore Precious Martin (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) with 6:51 left before halftime. Cal U led by as many as 25 points multiple times in the first half and took a 43-18 lead into the break after shooting 57.6 percent (19-of-33) from the floor.

Cal U started the second half on an 11-4 run to push its lead to 54-22 on a jumper by Dixon with 17:00 left to play. The Mountaineers then mounted an 8-2 rally to trim the deficit to 56-30, which would be the smallest deficit for the remainder of the game, at the 14:19-mark. Cal U eventually closed the game on a 12-5 run to stretch the lead to as many as 40 points, 83-43, following a layup by Dixon with 1:00 remaining.
