CALIFORNIA (Dec. 16) – Junior
Khalil Jabbie (Alexandria, Va./Edison) scored a game-high 16 points, including a pair of free-throws to break a tie with 1:16 left, as the Vulcans posted a 62-60 win over Shippensburg on Tuesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action at the Convocation Center.
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team improves to 7-3 this season with a 3-2 mark in league play. Meanwhile, Shippensburg falls to 5-3 overall behind a 1-3 record in conference action.
Jabbie scored nine of his 16 points in the second half and finished the game shooting 6-of-12 from the floor. He also totaled four rebounds, two assists and three steals in the victory. Jabbie has scored in double-digits in each of the last six games and is averaging 13.3 points during that span.
Junior forward
Richard Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/Lutheran East) finished with nine points, five rebounds and four steals against the Raiders. Junior
Jake Jacubec (Struthers, Ohio/Struthers) posted eight points (all in the second half), five rebounds and five assists, while freshman
Tony Richardson (Sterling, Va./Dominion) collected eight points and three rebounds.
Shippensburg opened the game with a 12-6 run before Cal U answered with a 12-2 rally to take an 18-14 lead on a three-pointer by sophomore
Drew Cook (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls) with 7:14 left in the first half. The Raiders countered with a 15-4 run after making four three-pointers to reclaim the lead at 29-22 with 1:41 remaining before the break. Cal U closed the first half with six-unanswered points to cut the deficit to 29-28.
The Vulcans started the second half on a 10-2 rally to take a 38-31 lead on a layup by Richardson with 17:59 left to play. Shippensburg responded with a 15-2 run over five-plus minutes to take a 46-40 lead with 12:47 remaining. The teams traded points for the next several minutes before the Vulcans scored nine-straight points to take a 59-57 lead on a three-pointer by Jacubec with 2:53 left in the second half.
Shippensburg tied the game at 59-59 on the ensuing possession before Cal U reclaimed the lead on a pair of free-throws by Jabbie with 1:16 remaining. The Raiders made the backend of two free-throws with 1:00 left before collecting a defensive rebound after a missed jumper with 22 seconds remaining. Shippensburg missed a pair of shots with less than 10 seconds left, including a putback attempt with five seconds remaining, before Smith grabbed the defensive rebound. He made the first of two free-throws to give the Vulcans a 62-60 lead. The Raiders missed a potential game-tying three-pointer as time expired.
The Vulcans finished the game shooting 38.7 percent (24-of-62) from the floor after making nearly 45 percent in the second half. Meanwhile, the Raiders shot at a 36.3 clip (20-of-55) from the field and 37.5 percent (9-of-24) from beyond the arc. Cal U finished with a 39-36 rebounding advantage and scored 30 points from inside the paint.
Sophomore Abe Massaley led the Raiders with 13 points and four assists, while freshman Justin McCarthur finished with 12 points. Redshirt senior Dylan Edgar posted nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds after entering the game as the only PSAC player to average a double-double.
Cal U continues PSAC Crossover play tomorrow, Wednesday, Dec. 17, when it hosts Kutztown at 7:30 p.m.
