CALIFORNIA (Dec. 17) – Playing for the second-straight day, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team suffered a 69-49 loss at the Convocation Center against hot-shooting Kutztown on Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 7-4 this season with a 3-3 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Golden Bears extend their winning streak to seven games to improve to 8-3 overall and 5-1 in conference action.
Juniors
Richard Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/Lutheran East) and
Khalil Jabbie (Alexandria, Va./Edison) both led the team with 12 points. Smith shot four-of-nine from the floor and four-of-four from the free-throw line and also registered his fourth double-double of the year, leading all players with 11 rebounds (five offensive). Jabbie converted 10-of-13 attempts from the charity stripe against the Golden Bears.
Freshman
Tony Richardson (Sterling, Va./Dominion) added eight points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals, while junior
Jake Jacubec (Struthers, Ohio/Struthers) scored eight points in the loss. Junior transfer
Calvin Brown (Trevose, Pa./Bensalem) collected seven rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench while playing in his second game of the year.
Kutztown raced out to a 17-5 lead in the opening five-plus minutes of the game after making seven of its initial eight shots. The teams traded points for the next three minutes before the Golden Bears scored five-straight points to take a 28-13 lead with 9:12 left in the first half. The Vulcans responded with nine-unanswered points to trim the deficit to 28-22 after Richardson converted a traditional three-point play at the 2:06-mark. Kutztown scored the final five points of the first half to take a 32-22 lead at the break.
The Vulcans scored six-straight points early in the second half before the Golden Bears mounted an 11-3 run over four-plus minutes to take a 47-33 lead with 12:04 remaining. Kutztown later scored 10-unanswered points to stretch its lead to 57-38 with 7:26 left to play and eventually led by as many as 69-49 in the final minute.
Cal U was held to a season-low 25.9 percent (15-of-58) from the floor, including just 18.2 percent (2-of-11) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Kutztown shot at a 52.5 clip (31-of-59) from the field and attempted only seven free-throws. Both teams finished with 39 rebounds with Kutztown scoring 46 points from in the paint. The Golden Bears also totaled 24 assists on 31 field-goals made.
Kutztown sophomore Josh Johnson nearly recorded a double-double, finishing with team highs of 15 points and nine rebounds. Redshirt senior Tyler Brooks and junior Tracy Peal, Jr. both added 12 points with Brooks also collecting seven rebounds, five assists and four blocks.
The Vulcans continue PSAC Crossover play on Saturday, Dec. 20, when they travel to face Mansfield at 3 p.m.
