INDIANA, Pa. (Nov. 15) – Junior guard
Jake Jacubec (Struthers, Ohio/Struthers) scored a team-high 18 points on Saturday evening, as the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team suffered an 86-85 loss to Urbana in the Atlantic Region Conference Challenge hosted by IUP at the
Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 1-1 this season. Meanwhile, the Blue Knights improve to 1-1 overall under first-year head coach Rob Summers.
Jacubec connected on 5-of-12 shots from the floor, including five-of-nine from beyond the arc. The Ohio native was one of four players to score in double-figures, as the trio of freshman
Tony Richardson (Sterling, Va./Dominion), sophomore
Drew Cook (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls) and senior
Arman Marks (Louisville, Ky./Eastern) each scored 14 points.
Early in the first half, the two teams traded points before junior transfer
Richard Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/Lutheran East) tied the game at 13-13 with a dunk at the 13:36-mark off an assist from Jacubec. Urbana then went on a 14-3 run to take a 27-17 lead before extending their first-half lead to 20 points after a 16-6 run late in the half. The Blue Knights eventually took a 50-32 lead at the break after shooting 50 percent in the first half.
In the second half, the Vulcans cut the deficit to 15 points after a three-pointer by Jacubec at the 16:41-mark. Cal U was finally able to cut the deficit to single-digits, 67-58, after a free-throw by Marks with 9:00 to play. The Vulcans then scored nine-straight points to trim the deficit to 69-67 with 5:48 remaining. Urbana responded by scoring nine of the next 13 points to take a seven-point lead with just over three minutes left. Trailing 86-82, Jacubec hit a three-pointer with two seconds remaining before the Blue Knights held on for the win.
Cal U was able to comeback after scoring 16 points off turnovers, holding an 11-2 advantage in the second half. The Vulcans also out-scored the Blue Knights 38-28 in the paint. Cal U shot 45.8 percent (27-for-59) for the game while shooting nearly 60 percent (15-for-27) in the second half.
Senior Rodney Clark, Jr. scored a game-high 27 points for Urbana on 7-of-12 shooting and made 13-of-15 from the charity stripe.
Cal U returns to action on Monday, Nov. 17, when it hosts nearby Penn State-Fayette at the Convocation Center with tip at 7 p.m.
