Vulcans top Fairmont State, 3-1

FAIRMONT, W.Va. (Oct. 7) – The Vulcans extended their winning streak to seven matches on Tuesday night with a 3-1 victory (25-23, 24-26, 25-22, 25-20) at Fairmont State in non-conference action.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 14-5 overall. Meanwhile, Fairmont State falls to 13-5 this season after losing three of its last four matches.

Senior Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) tallied her ninth kill/dig double-double of the season, leading the team with both 19 kills and 21 digs. Sophomore Danielle Hayes (Erie, Pa./McDowell) posted 13 kills on a .360 hitting percentage, while junior Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) and freshman Ashley Leto (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) added eight and seven kills, respectively. Sophomore Megan Litoborski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) nearly matched her career high in assists and registered her sixth assist/dig double-double of the year, finishing with 51 assists and 15 digs.

Junior Samantha Rudy (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) collected 18 digs, while Leto and senior Taylor Melidona (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) both added 12 digs on Tuesday. Junior Miranda Fouzie (Kingston, Ontario/Sydenham) finished with five blocks (two solo) in the victory and four players posted a pair of service aces.

The Vulcans opened the first set on a 5-0 run before the Fighting Falcons called a timeout after a solo block by Lavery. Fairmont State countered with a 10-4 rally to take a 10-9 lead after tallying six-straight points. Cal U then won six of the nine points to claim a 15-13 lead on a kill by Leto before later winning four of six points to take a 23-19 lead after a service ace by Miller. The Fighting Falcons won four of the five points before the Vulcans earned a 25-23 victory following an attack error.

The teams traded points in the early portion of the second set, which featured a combined 12 ties and five lead changes. Cal U mounted an 8-3 run midway through the set to take an 18-14 lead after an attack error. Following a timeout, the Fighting Falcons won seven of nine points to take a 21-20 lead before the Vulcans claimed four of the next five points to take a 24-22 lead. Fairmont State rallied back to win the next four points to earn a 26-24 victory in the set.

Early in the third set, Cal U won five of seven points to take a 6-4 lead before Fairmont State claimed four of five points to take an 8-7 lead. The teams traded the next four points before the Vulcans earned six-consecutive points to take a 15-10 lead on back-to-back kills by Miller and Lavery. The Fighting Falcons claimed eight of the next 11 points to tie the score at 18-18 before the Vulcans won five of six points to take a 23-19 lead. After Fairmont State won back-to-back points, Cal U posted the 25-22 set victory after winning two of the next three points.

Fairmont State opened the fourth set on a 9-3 run before Cal U won six of the next seven points to take a 10-9 lead on a kill by redshirt freshman Rachel Snyder (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley). The teams later traded runs of three-straight points before the Vulcans mounted an 8-2 rally to take a 21-17 lead on a kill by Snyder. Fairmont State won three of four points before Cal U claimed three-consecutive points to post a 25-20 win and the match victory.

Cal U returns to action this weekend with four Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover matches at IUP on Oct. 10-11.
