INDIANA, Pa. (Oct. 10) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team collected a pair of 3-0 wins over Cheyney and West Chester in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex on Friday.
With the victories, the Vulcans improve to 16-5 overall and 9-2 in league action while extending their win streak to nine matches. Cal U has now posted a combined 24-4 mark in PSAC Crossover play since the 2011 season.
Against Cheyney, sophomore
Destiny Tucker (Ambridge, Pa. /Ambridge) led the team with a career-high eight kills while posting a .278 hitting percentage. She also added four blocks (two solo) and finished with 13 points in the victory. Freshman
Maggie Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) collected six kills in her second career match and sophomore
Kayla Smith (Groveport, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) tallied five kills. Freshman
Taylor Solo (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) and sophomore
Kristen Scurpa (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) directed the offense with 19 and 18 assists, respectively, in the win.
Redshirt freshman
Rachel Snyder (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) paced the team with 13 digs. Sophomore
Abby Matusik (Mars, Pa./Mars) tallied 10 digs and freshman
Emily Berry (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) finished with eight digs, plus another six players collected at least three digs.
Against West Chester, sophomore
Danielle Hayes (Erie, Pa./McDowell) totaled a team-high 12 kills on a .320 hitting percentage and junior
Miranda Fouzie (Kingston, Ontario/Sydenham) finished with 11 kills while hitting at an impressive .688 clip. Senior
Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and freshman
Ashley Leto (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) both posted eight kills, while junior
Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) added seven kills in the victory.
Sophomore
Megan Litoborski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) recorded her seventh assist/dig double-double of the season, and fifth consecutive, finishing with 35 assists and 13 digs. The Vulcans featured six players with at least 10 digs in the match with Litoborski,
Mary Lavery and senior
Taylor Melidona (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) tying for the team lead with 13 digs. Leto added 12 digs, while Miller and junior
Samantha Rudy (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) both finished with 10 digs.
Cal U continues league crossover play tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 11, with a pair of matches in Indiana, Pennsylvania.
