Cal U earns sweep of Edinboro, 3-0

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 4) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team earned a 3-0 win (25-23, 25-18, 25-23) against Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 13-5 overall and 7-2 in league play. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots fall to 13-5 overall and 6-3 in conference play.

Senior Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) was one of five players to register at least six kills, as she registered a team-high nine kills. The duo of junior Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) and sophomore Danielle Hayes (Erie, Pa./McDowell) each totaled eight kills with Hayes hitting at a .500 clip. Junior Miranda Fouzie (Kingston, Ontario/Sydenham) and freshman Ashley Leto (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) both collected six kills in the win.

Sophomore Megan Litoborski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) handed out a match-high 28 assists and also recorded a match-high 17 digs. Junior Samantha Rudy (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) added 15 digs, while Leto and Miller each added eight digs in the victory.

In the opening set, the Vulcans jumped out to a 9-3 lead after an attack error before the Fighting Scots called a timeout. The Vulcans extended their lead to 15-5 after winning six of eight points. Cal U held a 23-13 lead late in the set before Edinboro went on a 10-1 run to trim the Vulcan lead to 24-23. The Vulcans then won the set on a kill by Fouzie while leading wire-to-wire.

The teams split the opening eight points of the second set before Edinboro won 10 of the next 15 points to take a 14-9 lead. Cal U then rallied to win 11 of the next 13 points and took a 20-16 lead after a service ace by Miller before winning five of the final seven points to win the set. The Vulcans hit .333 during the set, which featured six ties and two lead changes.

In a set that featured four ties and four lead changes, the Vulcans and Fighting Scots split the opening 10 points of the third set before Cal U won seven of the next nine points for a 12-7 lead after a kill by Leto. Edinboro trimmed the lead to 12-11 after winning four-straight points. Edinboro later won five of seven points to pull within two at 19-17. The teams then split the final 12 points as Cal U took the slim victory to complete the match sweep.

Cal U returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 7, when it travels to face Fairmont State in a non-conference match at 7 p.m.
