With the victories, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team improved to 21-1 overall with a 5-1 record in league action. The Vulcans have already totaled 25 homers this season and are out-scoring their opponents by over 100 runs (162-44). Meanwhile, Slippery Rock falls to 10-14 this season behind a 2-4 mark in divisional play.
In Game 1, Reicoff posted her second multi-homer game of the season and now leads the team with nine homers. The single-game school record of three homers was established last season by two-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American
Jillian Russell after several players had finished with two homers in a game.
Reicoff finished the game going 3-for-3 with three homers, five RBI and three runs scored. In her first at-bat, she posted a solo homer in the first before hitting a two-run homer in the third. Reicoff drew a walk in the fourth before hitting another two-run homer in the sixth.
Junior catcher
Natalie Wideman (Mississauga, Ontario/Streetsville Secondary) collected a pair of doubles and scored twice, while junior right fielder
Stephani Ellis (Vancouver, British Columbia/Prince of Wales Secondary) finished with two singles in the victory. Junior shortstop
Shelby Lia (Whitby, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson) scored two runs and sophomore center fielder
Shelby Heyd (Innisfil, Ontario/Nantyr Shores Secondary) tallied a pair of RBI.
After Reicoff's solo homer in the first, the Vulcans added another run in the second on a fielder's choice, 2-0. In the third, Lia opened the inning with a single before scoring on a Reicoff homer. Following a ground-out, freshman pitcher
Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) reached on a single and advanced to third on a double by Wideman. Heyd then delivered a two-run single to stretch the lead to 6-0. Cal U then forced the run-rule victory in the sixth on a two-run homer by Reicoff.
Sagl improved to 9-1 this season after tossing a three-hit, complete-game shutout. She registered seven strikeouts and issued no walks, while allowing only one runner to advance into scoring position in 6.0 innings (85 pitches). Rock starter Ashley Knight (7-9) suffered the loss after surrendering six runs (all earned) on eight hits and four walks in 5.0 innings (113 pitches).
In Game 2, junior
Hope Spancake (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) and Sagl combined for a three-hit shutout. Spancake (9-0) scattered two hits and posted three strikeouts over 4.0 innings (48 pitches) and Sagl yielded just one hit in 3.0 scoreless innings (49 pitches) of relief to earn her second save of the year. Slippery Rock junior Emily Lobdell was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs (both earned) on six hits and six walks in 7.0 innings (126 pitches).
In the top of the third, Lia and Reicoff opened the inning with back-to-back walks before Wideman later drew a walk to load the bases. Heyd then broke the scoreless tie with a two-out RBI single, 1-0. The Vulcans again loaded the bases in the fifth before scoring an insurance run in the sixth. Reicoff started a two-out rally with a walk and Ellis followed with an RBI double, 2-0. Slippery Rock threatened in the seventh with runners on the corners following a two-out single before Sagl registered a strikeout to end the game.
Lia collected two of the team's six hits and scored one run.
Cal U continues PSAC West play on Friday, April 12, when it hosts a doubleheader against Gannon at Lilley Field, starting at 2:30 p.m.
