PEMBROKE, N.C. (Feb. 9) – The California University of Pennsylvania softball team continued play at UNC Pembroke Invitational on Saturday with an 11-3 win against Concord and a 9-0 victory against Fayetteville State (N.C.), both in five innings.
With the wins, the Vulcans improve to 4-0 this season after scoring a combined 35 runs in two days.
Against the Mountain Lions (2-5), freshman
Lindsay Reicoff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits in 5.0 innings. She also went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored while hitting No. 3 in the lineup.
Concord scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first before Cal U countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. With runners on first and second, junior first baseman
Stephani Ellis (Vancouver, British Columbia/Prince of Wales Secondary) lined a RBI single before sophomore shortstop
Breanna Morris (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) later added a two-run single with two outs.
The Vulcans added to their lead in the second with a two-run single by sophomore center fielder
Shelby Heyd (Innisfil, Ontario/Nantyr Shores Secondary) before scoring six runs in the third, 11-2. Freshman left fielder
Erica Vallecorsa (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) collected a two-run single with the bases loaded before freshman right fielder
Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) scored on a passed ball. Reicoff later added a two-run double with two outs before scoring on a single by Ellis.
Cal U again loaded the bases in the fourth, but was unable to score after back-to-back runners were thrown out at home on fielder's choices. Concord added a run in the fifth with a bases-loaded single.
Ellis, Morris and Reicoff all collected two hits and two RBI, while Heyd and Reicoff scored twice.
Concord starter Rachael Mack (1-3) allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits in just 1.1 innings.
Against the Broncos (0-4), junior
Hope Spancake (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) earned the win after tossing 4.0 scoreless innings. She scattered four hits and registered six strikeouts in her second start of the year. Freshman
Haley Bashada (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) tossed a scoreless inning of relief while making her college debut in the circle.
In the bottom of the second, Cal U took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Morris and Sagl collected back-to-back singles before five-straight batters reached base safely with two outs. Freshman third baseman
Natalya Smarra (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox) registered a RBI double before scoring on a RBI single by junior catcher
Natalie Wideman (Mississauga, Ontario/Streetsville Secondary). Ellis later recorded a RBI single after Wideman scored on a fielding error.
The Vulcans added two runs in the third with Sagl scoring on an illegal pitch and Smarra collecting a RBI single, 7-0. Cal U forced the run-rule victory by scoring two runs in the fourth on a single by freshman
Tiffany Koenig (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman).
Smarra went 2-for-2 with two RBI and one run scored, while Sagl scored twice.
Fayetteville State starter Spencer Embler (0-2) suffered the loss after being roughed up for five runs (three earned) on six hits in 2.0 innings.
The Vulcans conclude play at the season-opening UNC Pembroke Invitational tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 10, when they face the host Braves at 9 a.m.
