GAFFNEY, S.C. (Feb. 23) – The Vulcans earned a doubleheader sweep against Newberry (S.C.) on Saturday afternoon at the Limestone Invitational, winning 6-3 before posting an 8-2 victory in the nightcap.
With the wins, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team improves to 9-0 this season. The Vulcans have already scored nearly 70 runs after totaling 30 extra-base hits, including 21 doubles. Meanwhile, Newberry falls to 8-4 this year.
In Game 1, freshman
Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) earned the complete-game victory after allowing three runs (all earned) on seven hits. She now boasts a 4-0 record this season and leads the team with a 1.15 ERA and 29 strikeouts.
The Vulcans took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first after the first seven batters of the game reached base. Junior right fielder
Stephani Ellis (Vancouver, British Columbia/Prince of Wales Secondary) and sophomore shortstop
Breanna Morris (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) both drew bases-loaded walks before junior
Shelby Lia (Whitby, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson) collected a two-run single.
Newbery answered with two runs in the second before Cal U countered with two runs in the fifth. With runners on first and second, Sagl delivered an RBI single before scoring on a two-out RBI double by
Erica Vallecorsa (Latham, N.Y./Shaker). The Wolves later added a run in the bottom of the sixth, 6-3.
Lia finished 2-for-4 with two RBI in Game 1, while sophomore center fielder
Shelby Heyd (Innisfil, Ontario/Nantyr Shores Secondary) and Sagl both collected two hits.
Wolves starter Kaylyn Camacho (3-2) suffered the loss after allowing four runs (all earned) on five hits and two walks in 2.1 innings.
In the nightcap, junior
Hope Spancake (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) tossed 4.1 innings of relief to earn the victory. She scattered five hits and allowed one run (earned) after freshman
Lindsay Reicoff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) went 2.2 innings in her fourth start of the year.
Cal U took a 3-0 lead after collecting only one hit in the bottom of the second. Ellis led off the inning with a single before advancing to third when Morris reached on a throwing error. Ellis then scored on a sacrifice fly before Lia reached on a walk and a passed ball moved both runners into scoring position. Morris eventually scored on a ground-out before Lia stole home on a double-steal attempt.
Both teams scored a run in the third before the Wolves added a run in the fourth, 4-2. Morris belted a two-run homer in the fifth before the Vulcans added two more runs in the sixth. After a single by Vallecorsa, freshman third baseman
Natalya Smarra (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox) lined an RBI triple before scoring on a ground-out.
Reicoff extended her hitting streak to nine games in the nightcap, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Ellis also stretched her hitting streak to eight games, while Morris scored two runs and collected two RBI.
Newberry starter Shelley Jeffcoat was saddled with the loss after allowing eight runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks in 6.0 innings.
The Vulcans are scheduled to continue play at the Limestone Invitational tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 24, when they play a doubleheader against the host Saints, starting at 11 a.m.
