CALIFORNIA (May 2) – The trio of offensive lineman
Rishaw Johnson (Hammond, La./Hammond), wide receiver
Thomas Mayo (Reston, Va./South Lakes) and defensive back
James Nixon (New Haven, Conn./Hyde Leadership) have recently signed as undrafted free agents with NFL organizations in the days following the 2012 NFL Draft.
Johnson signed with the Seattle Seahawks, Mayo with the Oakland Raiders and Nixon with the Arizona Cardinals.
Johnson joins former Cal U quarterback
Josh Portis in Seattle after a decorated 2011 campaign. He was invited to the NFL Combine in February after playing against the top seniors in the country at both the East-West Shrine Game and Senior Bowl. Johnson was named a D2Football.com First-Team All-American after previously playing three seasons at Ole Miss. The 6-5, 310-pound Louisiana native started 12 games at right guard and helped anchor an offensive line that allowed only 17 sacks while setting school records for pass attempts and passing yards.
A three-time D2Football.com All-American, Mayo joins the Raiders following a stellar senior season. He finished second in NCAA Division II with a career-high 16 touchdown receptions and ranked fourth in the country with 1,359 receiving yards. A native of Virginia, Mayo also participated in the East-West Shrine Game and finished his career ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division II history with 4,249 receiving yards.
With experience on both sides of the ball and on special teams, Nixon joins the Cardinals after playing defensive back for the Vulcans in 2011. He played in 12 games with two starts in the secondary, finishing with 14 tackles (eight solo). Nixon previously played three seasons at Temple, serving as a running back, wide receiver and defensive back.
Last season, the Vulcans boasted four players on active NFL rosters. Portis served as the No. 3 quarterback with the Seahawks after signing as an undrafted free agent last July. Former wide receiver
Dominique Curry completed his second year with the St. Louis Rams, making 10 tackles (nine solo) after appearing in all 16 games on special teams.
After being selected in the 2011 NFL Draft, former defensive back
Tommie Campbell appeared in 15 games with the Tennessee Titans. He finished with eight tackles (four solo), forced one fumble and scored a touchdown on a kick return. Former All-American defensive back
Terrence Johnson played in 10 games and made two starts with the Indianapolis Colts, posting 37 tackles (28 solo) with a career-high eight stops (six solo) while playing on Monday Night Football.
In addition, former wide receiver
Derrick Jones signed with Oakland last summer and was placed on injured reserve after suffering an ACL injury in training camp.
