MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (April 7) – Sophomore Hope Spancake (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) earned a pair of victories on Saturday afternoon, as the No. 25 California University of Pennsylvania softball team swept a doubleheader at Millersville, winning 2-1 and 3-1.

With the victories, the Vulcans have now won eight of their last nine games to improve to 26-6 overall. Meanwhile, the Marauders fall to 14-24 this season.

Spancake recorded a complete-game victory in Game 1 before tossing 6.0 shutout innings of relief in the nightcap. She surrendered just one run (earned) in 13.0 innings of work on Saturday with 14 strikeouts. An All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West First-Team selection last year, Spancake now boasts a 14-2 record and a 1.34 ERA with 106 strikeouts this season.

In Game 1, the Vulcans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a solo homer by freshman center fielder Katie Natter (Baldwin, Pa./Baldwin), who now leads the team with 12 homers this season. Cal U added to its lead in the fourth with back-to-back, two-out doubles by senior catcher Alyson Johnson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) and freshman shortstop Breanna Morris (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central), 2-0. The Marauders cut into the deficit with a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the sixth before Spancake induced consecutive pop-ups to preserve the lead, 2-1.

Morris went 2-for-3 with an RBI double in Game 1. Spancake yielded one run (earned) on four hits in 7.0 innings (114 pitches) and established a season high with 12 strikeouts. Millersville starter Alicia Hughes (4-10) suffered the loss after allowing two runs (both earned) on six hits in 7.0 innings (97 pitches).

In Game 2, the Marauders took a 1-0 lead in the first before the Vulcans tied the game with an RBI single by Morris in the second inning. Cal U took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third when senior shortstop Jillian Russell (London, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic) scored from second on a fielder's choice.

The Vulcans added an insurance run in the fifth when Russell belted a solo homer, her 11th of the season. With her seventh homer in the last 10 games, Russell is now tied with Bloomsburg's Vanessa Sterner (1998-2001) for fifth place in PSAC history with 44 career homers.

Russell, junior designated player Stephani Ellis (Vancouver, British Columbia/Prince of Wales Secondary) and freshman right fielder Shelby Heyd (Innisfil, Ontario/Nantyr Shores Secondary) each finished with two hits and Russell scored twice.

Spancake (14-2) earned the win after scattering three hits in 6.0 scoreless innings of relief (59 pitches). Marauders' Sarah Bertoni (6-1) was saddled with the loss after yielding three runs (two earned) on eight hits with seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings (107 pitches).

Cal U returns to divisional play on Tuesday, April 10, with a doubleheader in Erie, Pa., against Gannon, starting at 2:30 p.m.
