EDINBORO, Pa. (April 3) – Senior third baseman Jillian Russell (London, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic) broke the single-game school record with three homers in Game 1 on Tuesday afternoon to help lead the California University of Pennsylvania softball team to a run-rule doubleheader sweep at Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action, winning 13-1 and 9-0 – both in five innings.

With the victories, the Vulcans improve to 23-5 overall after extending their win streak to five games. Cal U also took sole possession of first place in the divisional standings with a 5-1 record. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots fall to 12-10 this season with a 2-4 mark in league play.

In Game 1, Russell posted her third career multi-homer game and first since last March. The previous single-game school record of two homers was tied four times earlier this season, including three times by freshman outfielder Katie Natter (Baldwin, Pa./Baldwin). Russell broke the all-time school record for homers last weekend and now ranks seventh in PSAC history with 42 career homers.

Russell finished the game going 3-for-4 with three homers, seven RBI and three runs scored. After grounding out in the first, the two-time PSAC West Athlete of the Year posted a solo homer in the third before hitting three-run homers in both the fourth and fifth innings. The seven RBI by Russell is tied for the second-most in single-game school history behind only the record of eight RBI collected by classmate Alyson Johnson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) in 2009.

Natter also belted a pair of homers at Edinboro in Game 1, marking her third multi-homer game of the year. She now leads the team with 12 home runs this year and is only one homer shy of tying the freshman school record set by Johnson in 2009. Natter went 3-for-3 with a pair of two-run homers, four RBI and four runs scored.

The Vulcans took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run homer by Natter before the Fighting Scots countered with a solo homer by center fielder Kari Falk in the bottom of the inning, 2-1. In the third, Natter and Russell belted back-to-back homers to stretch the lead to 5-1.

Russell posted a three-run homer in the fourth before Johnson followed with a two-out RBI single, 9-1. The Vulcans forced the run-rule victory after scoring four runs on three hits in the top of the fifth, 13-1. Russell collected a three-run homer before outfielders Stephani Ellis (Vancouver, British Columbia/Prince of Wales Secondary) and Shelby Heyd (Innisfil, Ontario/Nantyr Shores Secondary) registered back-to-back doubles.

Wideman and Johnson each finished with two hits and Wideman also scored three runs.

Sophomore Hope Spancake (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) earned the win after yielding one run on one hit - a solo homer - and registered six strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Edinboro starter Amanda Shields (7-5) was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs (all earned) on six hits in 2.1 innings.

In Game 2, five Vulcans posted multi-hit games with Heyd and Johnson each posting homers. Heyd led the team with three RBI while recording her first career home run. Johnson tallied her 11th multi-hit game of the season, finishing 2-for-3 with a solo homer (35th career). Wideman also extended her hitting streak to eight games after collecting a pair of hits while batting leadoff.

Cal U took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Heyd was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. In the second, the Vulcans expanded their lead to 4-0 with RBI doubles by freshman Madison Yanek (North Lima, Ohio/South Range) and Natter. Johnson led off the third with a solo homer before Yanek and Wideman collected back-to-back doubles, 6-0.

Heyd recorded a two-run homer in the fourth and the Vulcans then forced the run-rule victory when Ellis collected a two-out RBI single in the fifth, 9-0.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Schilling (Morrisville, Pa./Pennsbury) improved to 10-2 this season after tossing a three-hit, complete-game shutout with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Fighting Scots' Kari Falk (5-5) suffered the loss after being roughed up for eight runs (all earned) on 11 hits in 4.0 innings.

The Vulcans continue divisional play on Friday, April 6, when they host a doubleheader with Slippery Rock, starting at 2:30 p.m. Live stats of the games will be available by clicking here.
