CALIFORNIA (April 13) – Senior third baseman
Jillian Russell (London, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic) became just the 10th player in school history with 200 hits on Friday afternoon, as the No. 24 California University of Pennsylvania softball team posted five homers in a doubleheader sweep over Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action, winning 3-1 and 10-0 on Senior Day.
With the sweep, the Vulcans improve to 30-6 overall with a 10-2 mark in divisional play. Cal U has now won at least 30 games in three of the last four seasons, including 37 victories in 2010 when it advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals. Meanwhile, Edinboro falls to 14-16 this season behind a 4-8 record in league action.
Russell posted a homer in each game of the doubleheader on Friday to reach the 200-hit milestone, becoming the first Cal U player since
Gabrielle Rendon (2001-04) to accomplish the feat. With her two homers against Edinboro, Russell now boasts 46 homers in her career and is just one shy of tying single-season school record of 14 (
Jen Wagner 1994;
Jennifer Doty 2005; Russell 2011). Russell joins Wagner and
Kristin Heslop (1999-02) as the only players in program history with at least 200 hits and 30 homers in a career.
In Game 1, sophomore
Hope Spancake (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) won her sixth-consecutive start to improve to 13-2 this season. She yielded just one run (earned) on four hits and no walks in 7.0 innings (96 pitches). Spancake also recorded eight strikeouts in her 17th complete game of the year. Fighting Scots' Amanda Shields suffered the loss after allowing three runs (all earned) on seven hits in 6.0 innings.
The Vulcans took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run homer by Russell after sophomore second baseman
Natalie Wideman (Mississauga, Ontario/Streetsville Secondary) led off the inning with a single. Cal U added to its lead in the second inning when Wideman collected an RBI single through the right side that scored sophomore
Shelby Lia (Whitby, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson) from second.
Edinboro cut into the deficit with back-to-back doubles in the fourth, 3-1, before Spancake allowed just two more base runners in the final 3.2 innings.
Wideman went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored, while Russell tallied a pair of RBI in the victory.
In the nightcap, sophomore
Kaitlyn Schilling (Morrisville, Pa./Pennsbury) tossed a two-hit, complete-game shutout against the Fighting Scots. She allowed just two base runners in the victory and registered six strikeouts in 5.0 innings (57 pitches). Edinboro starter Kari Falk (6-8) was saddled with loss after surrendering eight runs (all earned) on eight hits and two walks in 3.0-plus innings.
In the bottom of the first, Cal U took a 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI single by sophomore designated player
Stephani Ellis (Vancouver, British Columbia/Prince of Wales Secondary) that scored Wideman from second. The Vulcans added to their lead in the second with a two-out RBI double by senior left fielder
Kristen McKenzie (Senneville, Quebec/St. Thomas), 2-0.
The Vulcans broke the game open in the third, taking an 8-0 lead after back-to-back-to-back homers with two outs. Freshman
Breanna Morris (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) posted a three-run homer, the first of her career, before Lia and McKenzie followed with solo homers.
Cal U continued to add to its lead in the fourth when Russell opened the inning with a solo homer, 13th of the season. Later in the inning, Lia and McKenzie delivered back-to-back RBI singles with two outs to stretch the lead to 10-0.
One of three seniors on the team, McKenize went 3-for-3 with a solo homer and three RBI in the nightcap. Morris finished 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and three runs scored, while senior
Alyson Johnson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) scored twice.
The Vulcans are idle for a week before returning to action on Friday, April, 20, with a doubleheader in Erie, Pa., against Mercyhurst, starting at 2:30 p.m.
