CALIFORNIA (April 10) – Redshirt freshman Randi Miller (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata) delivered a pinch-hit, game-winning single in the sixth on Sunday afternoon to help lead the No. 24 California University of Pennsylvania softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play, winning 1-0 and 4-2 at Lilly Field.

With the victories, the Vulcans improve to 25-9 this season with a 9-1 record in league action. With roughly two weeks before the PSAC Tournament, Cal U holds a four-game lead in the divisional standings with three league doubleheaders left on the schedule. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots drop to 12-13 overall and 3-7 in league play.

Trailing 2-1 in the nightcap, Cal U scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to claim the lead. Junior shortstop Jillian Russell (London, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic) and junior designated player Alyson Johnson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) started the rally with singles and junior first baseman Sarah Spiering (Upper Burrell, Pa./Burrell) followed with a game-tying, RBI single that allowed Russell to score and Johnson to move to third on the throw. After freshman Paige Onuska (Midland, Pa./Beaver) entered as a pinch runner for Spiering, Edinboro induced a ground out to the pitcher before Miller tallied a two-run, game-winning single to the left-centerfield gap on the first pitch of the at-bat.

Freshman Kaitlyn Schilling (Morrisville, Pa./Pennsbury) improved to 8-4 after tossing a one-hit, complete game on Sunday. She allowed two runs (both unearned) and issued no walks in 7.0 innings (86 pitches) while recording five strikeouts.

The Vulcans took a 1-0 lead in the second with a solo homer by Spiering, her sixth of the season. Schilling retired the first nine batters of the game for Edinboro before shortstop Marissa Pullo reached on a fielding error to start the top of the fourth. Center fielder Kari Falk followed with a single and advanced to second on the throw before Pullo scored on a throwing error when the Vulcans attempted to throw Falk out at second. Falk moved to third on the error and eventually scored on the second throwing error of the play to give Edinboro a 2-1 lead on only one single and three errors.

Spiering went 3-for-3 in the nightcap with one double, one homer, two RBI and one run scored. Freshman second baseman Shelby Lia extended her hitting streak to 13 games, going 2-for-3 with one double.

The Fighting Scots' Brittney Mackey (2-4) sustained the loss after yielding three runs (all earned) on seven hits in 5.1 innings of work.

In Game 1, freshman Hope Spancake (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) tossed her fourth complete-game shutout of the season to improve to 13-4. She scattered four hits and one walk over 7.0 innings (82 pitches) and now leads the team with 76 strikeouts, after striking out four Fighting Scots.

Cal U manufactured the game's only one run in the bottom of the third on two singles. Lia reached base on a one-out single and advanced to second on a groundout. After stealing third, Lia scored on a two-out RBI single by Russell. Edinboro threatened with two runners on base and two outs in the both fifth and sixth before Spancake retired the next batter to end each inning.

Edinboro's Amanda Shields (4-5) suffered the loss despite allowing one run (earned) on five hits and two walks in 6.0 innings (102 pitches).

After playing doubleheaders on four-straight days, Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, April 13, with a league doubleheader at Slippery Rock. The first game is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
