CAL U NOTES
• Cal U closes out divisional play this weekend when it hosts rival Edinboro on Senior Day. The Vulcans claimed a 28-10 win against IUP in the third-annual Coal Bowl last week. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots have won three-straight games, including a 42-7 victory over Lock Haven last Saturday.
• The Vulcans and Fighting Scots are meeting for the 78th time with Cal U owning a 40-35-2 lead after winning the last six games. Last year, Cal U posted a 24-0 shutout win at Edinboro.
• Behind three touchdown passes from junior
Peter Lalich, the Vulcans took sole possession of second place in the PSAC West standings with a 28-10 victory over IUP in the third-annual Coal Bowl. Lalich was named the Joy Mining MVP after passing for 224 yards on 9-of-17 attempts with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Junior
Lamont Smith and freshman
Jeff Knox, Jr. each finished with 100-plus yards on the ground and Knox scored a touchdown. The Vulcans limited the Crimson Hawks to a season-low 218 yards of total offense, including just 90 passing yards after completing only five passes.
• After a 20-year career as an assistant coach at Edinboro,
Scott Browning is in his sixth season as head coach of the Fighting Scots. He holds a 45-21 overall record and in his first five years he won more games than any previous Edinboro head coach during that period. Browning has coached the offensive line, defensive backs and running backs, along with serving as the offensive coordinator while at Edinboro.
• Behind an efficient offense and top-ranked scoring defense in the PSAC, Edinboro is 7-2 this year and were 10th in the initial Super Region One rankings last week. In his second year as the starter, sophomore
Cody Harris has developed into one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the league. He has passed for over 1,400 yards and 13 touchdowns with only five interceptions, while completing 71.8 percent (127-of-177) of his passes. The duo of senior
Brian Davis and sophomore
Drew Herrell has provided balance to the offense by rushing for over 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns. Senior
David Bostic anchors the receiving corps and is fourth in the PSAC with seven touchdown receptions this year. Bostic was named the PSAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sunday after breaking the school records with 13 receptions and 255 receiving yards, while tying the school mark with three touchdown catches against Lock Haven. The Fighting Scots enter the weekend allowing a PSAC-best 14.0 points/game, while ranking second in the league in total defense (257.9 yards/game) and third in rushing defense (112.0 yards/game). Senior linebacker
Ryan Skelton, a three-year starter, leads the team and ranks fifth in the PSAC with a career-high 78 tackles (43 solo). He has also registered 11.5 tackles for loss (TFL) and 5.5 sacks after earning All-PSAC West honors last year. Senior defensive lineman
Keir Jeter leads the Fighting Scots and is among the league leaders with 17.0 TFL, 7.5 sacks and three forced fumbles. Sophomore cornerback
James Jackson leads the team with four interceptions after making five interceptions as a true freshman last year. On special teams, senior
Alex Romanias is third among kickers in the PSAC with 7.4 points/game after converting 32-of-34 PAT attempts and 9-of-10 field goals, while fellow senior
Ryan Genco also ranks fourth in the league with an average of 38.0 yards/punt.
• Cal U has won 12 of its last 14 games in November since the start of the 2007 season. In the previous decade from 1997-2006, the Vulcans struggled down the stretch of the season by posting only a 6-14 record (.300).
• The Vulcans feature a special group of 19 seniors in 2011. The class has collectively posted a 40-12 overall record (.769) over the last four years and an impressive 25-2 mark (.926) in PSAC West games. Combined, the 2011 seniors have started an astounding 288 career games.
• In the victory last week against IUP, junior
Lamont Smith and freshman
Jeff Knox, Jr. both rushed for over 100 yards. Smith finished with 147 yards and tied his season high with 24 attempts (6.1 yards/attempt) against the Crimson Hawks. Knox posted 106 yards and one touchdown on 25 carries after entering the game with only 38 rushing yards for the year. It marked the first time since Dec. 2007 (Shepherd) that the Vulcans had a pair of 100-yard rushers (
Daine Williams,
Windell Brown) in the same game.
• Former Cal U cornerback and current Tennessee Titans special teams standout
Tommie Campbell is listed on the 2012 Pro Bowl ballot. Last year, Campbell played all 12 games with the Vulcans before being selected by the Titans in the seventh round of the NFL Draft. Fans can vote to send Campbell as a rookie to the Pro Bowl in Honolulu on Jan. 29 by visiting NFL.com.
• Following last week's win at then-regionally-ranked IUP, the Vulcans moved into the latest NCAA Super region One rankings. Cal U debuted this week eighth in the rankings and is one of four PSAC teams listed in the top 10. The NCAA Selection Committee will select six teams from the region, which is comprised of the PSAC, WVIAC and CIAA, at the end of the regular season to participate in the NCAA Playoffs.
• Junior running back
Lamont Smith posted his fifth 100-yard rushing game of the season in last week's win at IUP and enters the weekend ranked fifth in the PSAC in rushing at 92.6 yards/game. The former Central Catholic standout is only one yard of away from reaching the 2,000-yard mark in his career after he posted 1,166 rushing yards last season. Smith could become only the fourth player in school history to eclipse the 1,000-yard milestone in back-to-back seasons (
Wesley Cates,
Antoine Bagwell,
Daine Williams).
• Senior
Thomas Mulabah has become one of the most impactful defensive lineman in school history throughout his career. A three-year starter, he enters the weekend ranked third in school history with 30.0 career TFL, which is only 1.5 TFL behind the all-time record held by
Willie Walker. Mulabah has established a career high with 42 tackles (16 solo) this season, while also registering 6.5 TFL, 2.0 sacks, one interception, three fumble recoveries and two blocked kicks.
• For only the fifth time in school history, the Vulcans feature a 1,000-yard receiver, as senior
Thomas Mayo reached the milestone last week at IUP. Former All-American
Perry Kemp became the first player in Cal U history to surpass the 1,000-yard mark in 1983 and Mayo is now the fourth player in the last five years to eclipse 1,000 yards (
Marcel Pestano,
A.J. Jackson,
Terrance Moore). The 6-2 senior became only the 16th player in NCAA Division II history with 4,000 career receiving yards last week (4,031). Mayo also ranks 22nd all-time with 248 receptions and 39 touchdowns, including 36 over the last three years.
• Senior defensive lineman
Marcus Cook has established himself as one of the most durable players in school history. Since starting the season-opener in 2009, Cook has made 36-consecutive starts and earned All-PSAC West Second-Team honors. Former teammate
Willie Walker, the 2009 PSAC West Defensive Player of the Year, set the school record with 54-straight starts from 2006-09. A native of Cincinnati, Cook has recorded 80 tackles (34 solo), 16.0 TFL and 8.0 sacks in his career.
• With his score last week at IUP, senior wide receiver
Chedrick Cherry became only the fourth player in school history to post 20 receiving touchdowns in a career. Last season, Cherry led the PSAC with a career-high 13 receiving touchdowns after posting only four scores in his first two seasons. An All-PSAC West selection in 2010, he is also within reach of becoming only the sixth player in school history with 2,000 career receiving yards.
• Edinboro enters this weekend's game tied for the league lead and sixth in the country with a plus-12 turnover margin. The Fighting Scots feature two of the top cornerbacks in the PSAC in sophomore
James Jackson and junior
Branden Williams, who have combined for seven interceptions this year. Williams missed all but the season-opener last year after being a preseason All-American selection in 2010. Meanwhile, Cal U ranks ninth in the league with a turnover margin of plus-1 after recording 24 turnovers, which is the fourth-highest total in the PSAC.
