CAL U NOTES
• Cal U returns to Adamson Stadium with an undefeated 4-0 record following last weekend's 24-9 victory at Clarion in the PSAC West-opener. Meanwhile, Lock Haven remains winless this year after suffering a 41-0 loss at Mercyhurst last Saturday.
• Sophomore running back #
Lamont Smith# rushed for 185 yards while the defense forced four interceptions and allowed 133 yards of total offense in last week's 24-9 win at Clarion. Smith finished with 185 yards and a touchdown on 39 attempts, while junior #
Chedrick Cherry# had another 100-yard receiving game. In addition to the interceptions, the Vulcans only yielded 29 rushing yards and nine first downs to the Golden Eagles. Junior safety #
Erik Harris# led the team with five stops and was one of four players with an interception.
• The Vulcans and Bald Eagles are meeting for the 67th time this weekend. Cal U has won six-straight and eight of the last 10 meetings against Lock Haven, including a 48-14 victory last year.
• In his sixth season as head coach,
John Klacik has posted a 5-54 mark with the Bald Eagles. Prior to his stint at Lock Haven, Klacik worked 17 years as an assistant at the Division I and Division I-AA levels between Youngstown State and Wake Forest. He is a 1988 graduate of Lock Haven and played wide receiver, finishing his career among the all-time leaders in receptions and receiving yards.
• Lock Haven returns just nine starters from last year's team that was winless for the second-straight season. The Bald Eagles are posting only 10.0 points this season and are averaging a PSAC-low 236.0 yards of total offense per game. After seeing extensive action in 2009, junior quarterback
Jarryd Burkett leads the team with 531 passing yards after completing over 65 percent of his passes. The league's worst rushing attack has been led by redshirt sophomore
Jeremiah Dunchack, who has 120 yards while averaging only 2.9 yards through four games. Senior defensive end
Nick Gounaris returns as one of only three returning starters on defense for the Bald Eagles. An All-PSAC West Second-Team selection last year, he has collected 13 tackles (six solo) with a team-high 3.0 tackles for loss (TFL). Redshirt junior free safety
Kenny Monroe leads the team with a career-high 27 stops (18 solo), while senior linebacker
Wes Plummer has made 23 tackles (14 solo) after leading the team last year with 62 stops. Freshman
Rashad Johnson and sophomore
Ian Smith have split the kick return duties this year and have combined for an average of nearly 18.0 yards per return. Redshirt sophomore
Jarrett Kratzer has primarily handled the punting duties in 2010, posting over 33 yards per punt while also seeing time at quarterback.
• This weekend features the longest winning and losing streaks in the PSAC West. Behind five-straight divisional crowns, Cal U has won 21-consecutive games in league play dating back to 2006. Meanwhile, Lock Haven has suffered 15-straight losses in divisional games dating back to the final week of the 2007 season.
• Cal U has won 56 of its last 66 games (.848) overall, dating back to the start of the 2005 season. The Vulcans have posted a 36-4 (.900) record in regular season games dating back to the 2006 campaign.
• Senior center #
Nick Piccirillo# has established himself as one of the most durable players in school history. Since starting as a true freshman for the Vulcans in 2007, he has made a team-high 43 consecutive starts. In each of the last two seasons, Piccirillo has been selected to the All-PSAC West Second-Team.
• Through the first four games, the Cal U defense has made the end zone foreign territory after halftime for opponents. Including the overtime game in the season-opener, the Vulcans have allowed only a combined 22 points after halftime this year. Meanwhile, the Cal U offense has been a juggernaut by scoring 91 points in the second half and overtime.
• The Vulcans feature a group of 24 seniors in 2010. The senior class has compiled a record of 40-7 and started a combined 236 games.
• After making the switch from a 3-4 defense midway through last year to a 4-2-5 scheme has produced drastic results for the secondary in 2010. The Vulcans already have 11 interceptions this season after posting 18 last year. First-year starter #
Shawn Anderson# leads the team with four interceptions, while juniors #
Erik Harris# and #
Patrick Swearinger# each have two interceptions. Last week, the secondary forced all four turnovers (all interceptions) at Clarion.
• Senior #
Marc Domonkos# has been one of the most accurate kickers in the PSAC since joining the Vulcans after playing two years at Lock Haven (2006-07). Over the last two seasons, he has made 14-of-19 field goals (73.7 percent) and 68-of-70 PAT attempts (97.1 percent). This year, the Johnstown native ranks second among kickers in the PSAC with 33 points behind five field goals and 18 PAT attempts.
• Sophomore running back #
Lamont Smith# has established season highs in both rushing yards and attempts in three-straight weeks. Last Saturday, the 185-pound Smith was the workhorse for the offense, finishing with 39 attempts for 185 yards and the game-sealing, six-yard touchdown. His 39 carries were the most for a Vulcan since #Brandon Lombardy# rushed 40 times in 2006 at Shippensburg. Smith is also the first player to rush for over 100 yards in three-straight games since #Daine Williams# had four-consecutive 100-yard games late in 2007.
• Former Cal U special teams standout, St. Louis Rams wide receiver #
Dominique Curry# blocked a first-quarter punt on Sunday in a 30-16 home victory against the Washington Redskins. He also made a tackle on special teams in the win. Curry has played in each of the last two weeks and is the first Vulcan to play in a NFL regular-season game since
Perry Kemp in 1991.
• After earning All-PSAC West accolades as a kick returner last year, junior #
Chedrick Cherry# is establishing himself as one of the premier wide receivers in the PSAC in 2010. The Cincinnati native has posted his first career 100-yard games in back-to-back weeks for the high-scoring Vulcans. Against Clarion, he set a new career high with eight receptions and finished with 110 yards and a touchdown. For the season, he ranks second in the league with four touchdown receptions and is seventh at 74.8 receiving yards per game.
• Junior safety #
Shawn Anderson# played in 24 games before becoming a starter in 2010. After four starts, he is tied for the lead in the PSAC with four interceptions and is second on the team with 17 tackles (11 solo). He has made at least one interception in three of the four games this season, including an interception in the red zone last week as time expired in the 24-9 victory at Clarion.
• The Cal U football program suffered a heartfelt loss on Sunday following the win at Clarion with the news that former Vulcan #
Hunter Cavey# (2006-09) was killed in a motorcycle accident in Maryland. Cavey served as the long-snapper and played on special teams for Cal U during his recent playing career.
