Vulcans earn at-large berth, hosting rights

INDIANAPOLIS (May 10) – The No. 15 Vulcans earned an at-large bid and hosting rights as the second seed in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament on Monday morning, as announced via a live webcast on NCAA.com.

The California University of Pennsylvania softball team (34-12) will make its third-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament and 16th overall in the last 17 seasons. The Vulcans will host a four-team, double-elimination regional tournament at Lilly Field from May 14-16.

The Vulcans, who received one of 42 at-large bids, open play in the tournament when they face Fairmont State (31-17) on Friday, May 14. The Fighting Falcons are making their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance after losing in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) Championship.

The other first-round contest at Lilly Field features No. 20 Kutztown (41-16) against Shepherd (35-13). The Golden Bears are making their eighth-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, while the Rams are appearing in the tournament for the second time in school history.

In addition to the games at Lilly Field, No. 6 Bloomsburg secured the top seed in the Atlantic Region and is hosting a four-team, double-elimination tournament this week. The winners of the Atlantic Regional Tournaments will face each other next weekend in a best-of-three series at the highest remaining seed. Each of the eight super regional winners advance to the College World Series in St. Joseph, Mo., from May 27-31.
