ERIE (April 19) – Junior Maria Greco (Pickering, Ontario/Notre Dame Catholic) threw her first career no-hitter on Monday afternoon, as the No. 19 California University of Pennsylvania softball team extended its win streak to 17 games with a doubleheader sweep at Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play, winning 3-1 and 3-0.

With the sweep, the Vulcans improve to 28-9 overall with a 13-1 record in league play. Since the expansion and realignment of the league last season, Cal U has compiled an impressive 26-2 record against PSAC West opponents. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights fall to 16-19 overall and 2-10 in divisional action this season.

Greco improved to 10-5 this season with her fifth-straight victory on Monday. She finished the 7.0-inning game with six strikeouts and no walks, while allowing only three base runners. After Gannon had two runners on in the first inning, the junior right-hander retired the next 19 batters in order.

Cal U broke the scoreless tie in the third inning behind two singles and a throwing error. With two runners in scoring position and one out, junior third baseman Danielle Easton (Hanover, Pa./South Western) executed a RBI bunt single that scored senior designated player Kayleigh Braim (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus).

The Vulcans added to their lead in the sixth with a pair of solo homers by Easton and sophomore catcher Alyson Johnson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central). Easton opened the inning with her fifth homer of the season, while two batters later Johnson belted her sixth longball of the year.

Easton finished the nightcap, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.

Golden Knights' starter Megan Dragon (10-8) suffered the loss in Game 2 after allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits in 6.0 innings, while fanning seven.

Cal U opened the day by collecting a 3-1 victory at Gannon University Field, as senior Lauren Shaheen (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) picked up her 14th-straight win. Shaheen (16-3) allowed one run (unearned) on three hits in 7.0 innings and tied her career high with 10 strikeouts.

The Vulcans took a 2-0 lead in the fourth when Braim and junior second baseman Merissa Daley (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair) each collected two-out RBI singles. Cal U later added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Eason scored on a fielder's choice after reaching base with a ground-rule double to start the inning.

Gannon avoided the shutout and snapped Shaheen's scoreless streak at 34.2 innings after scoring its lone run of the day in the bottom of the seventh.

Easton also posted a multi-hit effort in Game 1, finishing 2-for-4 with one run.

Gannon's Kelsey Brickman (3-9) was saddled with the loss, yielding three runs (all earned) on seven hits and six walks in 7.0 innings.

The Vulcans conclude the regular season tomorrow, Tuesday, April 20, when they host Slippery Rock for 2:30 p.m. doubleheader at Lilly Field. Cal U will be recognizing its six seniors tomorrow as part of Senior Day.
