INDIANA, Pa. (April 17) – The Vulcans won a pair of events and qualified four new entries for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships on Saturday afternoon, as they competed at the IUP Ed Fry Invitational.
Graduate student tri-captain
Clare McSweeney (Cork, Ireland/St. Aloysius) qualified for the PSAC Championships in the 1,500-meter run after winning the event with a time of 4 minutes, 47.08 seconds, which ranks as the sixth-fastest time in the league this season. Running the 1,500 meters for the first time this season, she won the event by over three seconds and was less than two seconds away from setting a new school record.
Freshman
Carly Youngeberg (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) also qualified for the league championships in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:01.45 to finish seventh in the 24-runner field.
The California University of Pennsylvania women's track & field team featured an impressive 1-2-3 finish in the 400-meter dash. Sophomore
Shakeria Love (York, Pa./Central York) won the event with a time of 58.42 seconds, while classmate
Jerica Snedden (Carrolltown, Pa./Cambria Heights) finished second with a season-best time of 59.19 seconds. Fellow sophomore
Sandy Estep (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) completed the top-three finish after crossing the finish line in 59.34 seconds.
Already a PSAC qualifier in the 5K, sophomore
Erin Kling (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown) qualified for the league championships in the 3,000-meter run at IUP after posting a time of 10:53.68 in her first time running the event.
Competing in her second invitational of the outdoor season, senior
Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood) posted a distance of 5.02 meters (16-5 3/4 feet) in the long jump to qualify for the PSAC Championships. She also finished fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 10.53 meters (34-6 3/4 feet).
In the pole vault, junior
Danielle Morrison (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and sophomore
Brittney Turley (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) both tied for fourth with a height of 2.90 meters (9-6 1/4 feet), which marked a season-high for Turley.
After setting the school record in each of the last two weeks, graduate student
Patsy Schreiber (Johnsonburg, Pa./Johnsonburg) posted a heave of 40.86 meters (134-0 feet) in the hammer throw. Freshman
Samantha Minich (Clinton, Pa./South Side Beaver) posted a season-best distance in the discus throw with a mark of 33.97 meters (111-5 feet), which is also the best distance of any Vulcan this season.
Cal U returns to action next weekend when it competes at the Paul Kaiser Classic, hosted by Shippensburg on Saturday, April 24.
