Softball extends win streak with sweep

PAINESVILLE, Ohio (April 11) – Sophomore shortstop Jillian Russell (London, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic) collected six hits on Sunday afternoon, as the California University of Pennsylvania softball team extended its winning streak to 13 games with 9-0 and 9-1 run-rule victories at Lake Erie in non-conference play.

With their sixth-straight doubleheader sweep, the Vulcans improve to 24-9 overall this season. Meanwhile, The Storm has lost nine of their last 11 games to fall to 8-28 this year.

In Game 1, senior right-hander Lauren Shaheen (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) earned her sixth complete-game shutout of the season. She scattered four hits in 5.0 innings with no walks and three strikeouts. Over her last 12 appearances (eight starts), Shaheen has posted an astounding 12-0 record with a 0.28 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 74.0 innings of work.

The Vulcans jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first behind four hits and one error. After the leadoff hitter reached base on an error, sophomore third baseman Danielle Easton (Hanover, Pa./South Western) belted a two-run homer (fourth of the season) to give Cal U the lead. Senior center fielder Julie Mackenzie (Mississauga, Ontario/Meadowvale) later added a RBI triple and scored on a groundout.

Cal U continued its offensive attack by scoring five runs with two outs in the top of the second to take a 9-0 lead. Russell started the rally with a solo longball (ninth of the season) and junior right fielder Amanda Wallace (Oakmont, Pa./Penn Hills) added a two-run single before scoring on a RBI single by sophomore right fielder Kristen McKenzie (Senneville, Quebec/St. Thomas).

Lake Erie starter Sam Ronde (2-11) suffered the loss after being roughed up for nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits in 2.0 innings.

Russell went 2-for-3 with a homer, and two runs scored, while Wallace and McKenzie each collected two hits and two RBI. Mackenzie finished with two hits and two runs scored.

In the nightcap, junior Maria Greco (Pickering, Ontario/Notre Dame Catholic) recorded her third-straight victory after allowing one run (unearned) on five hits in 5.0 innings, while fanning five.

Leading 2-1 after the first inning, the Vulcans added five runs in the second on seven hits. Wallace opened the inning with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error before scoring on a double by McKenzie. With two outs in the inning, sophomore catcher Alyson Johnson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) and Wallace both collected RBI singles.

Cal U scored its final two runs of the game in the third on a two-run triple by Russell, who finished 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Mackenzie went 3-for-3 with two RBI and Wallace and McKenzie each collected a pair of hits.

The Storm's starter Lauren Malicki (3-9) was saddled with the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits in only 2.0 innings of work.

The Vulcans return to league play on Tuesday, April 13, when they host a doubleheader at Lilly Field against Mercyhurst, starting at 2:30 p.m.
